On the campaign trail, Donald J. Trump has promised to do quite a few things that are beyond the powers of an American president, like billing Mexico for a border wall.
-New York Times

I mentioned this one time in an email to M.B.T.T. He responded good-naturedly, "I hate when you confront me with facts."

They don't care what Trump says literally, they don't take him literally, there is non-literal communication between them, they "feel" him. They understand Trump symbolically. They understand him to be communicating to them that he will take care of them, protect them.

The wall is a specific policy proposal by Trump and Trumpists do like the idea but it is not a "litmus test" for them, no specific policy proposal is a litmus test for them, Trump is the litmus test for them. If Ted Cruz had proposed a wall it wouldn't have floated Trumpists' boats. If Trump had responded to Cruz' idea of a wall by calling it beyond the powers of a president Trumpists would say "Amen" to that!
