Love, look at the two of us,
Supreme in many ways

On March 29, sometime in the early 1950’s, William Rehnquist sent Stanford Law classmate and study buddy Sandra Day (the only woman in the law school) a letter. Writing that he wanted to discuss “important things” with her Bill popped the question:

“To be specific, Sandy, will you marry me this summer?”

Twenty-six year old William Rehnquist seems to have had with women a similar condition to that of William James about whom Louis Menand wrote, “he had an unfortunate habit of picking targets already pierced by the arrows of other men” for on that March 29 of whatever year, 20 or 21 or 22 year old Sandra Day had completed her 40th date in 40 days with John Jay O’Connor who she married in 1952.

Bill and Sandy renewed their study buddy relationship in 1981 on the United States Supreme Court.

Okay... Uh...What was that? I sent it to my offspring, the male of whom responded

“I am embarrassed.”

I started a defense but couldn’t pull it off:

“Well...Alright, yeah I have to admit, I am too. I don’t know who that guy is. I thought he was a player and that the other players were going to come out of the sewer and dance like they did in Thriller. That would have been cool. But no.

“You know how you said English people are not good-looking?  WELL THEY CAN’T MOVE EITHER!”

Bad losses becoming Heat norm, including Tuesday in Charlotte

(Sun-Sentinel)

What was it this time...Wait. Tell me the score first. Un momento por favor...

Say no more! What was it last night? Almost the identical fucking score wasn't it?...123-113.

Hassan Whiteside closed with 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Heat...
...

2. Whiteside double-double: Whiteside recorded his fifth double-double in the season's first seven games, with a sense he could offer even more if given the reins to do more.
While there are plenty of similar talents in the Heat rotation, there are none who match what Whiteside can offer.
It's almost as if he becomes an afterthought at times because his baskets are only worth two points.
Okay, stop.

Erik reminds me of Barnesboro in another way in addition to car tinkerer. When my dad got really exasperated (which was frequently) with our dog Rusty for not listening he'd mutter to the family, "I'm just going to take him out and shoot him."

Pittsburgh Unites in Grief, Even as It Splits Over Trump’s Visit

(NYT)
It seemed as if all of Pittsburgh was there. The mayor came, as did Scott Brady, the United States attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, who will be prosecuting the man charged with killing the Rosenthal brothers.

A hundred-strong delegation of the Pittsburgh Steelers came to pay their respects, including the owner, the general manager, dozens of players and Mike Tomlin, the head coach, who lives in Squirrel Hill. Michele Rosenthal, one of the sisters of the David and Cecil, worked for the Steelers until several years ago.
Erik the Great tried to turn the "Heat" into Run TMC last night. He wanted to try the "Heat" out at the new, vogue, NBA "pace." That's the reason for the pinball score of 123-113. That's the reason the "Kinks" shot 49%. That's the reason Miami got the L.

Erik is a tinkerer. He tinkers. He's like one of those guys in Barnesboro who was forever tearing apart and rebuilding his car. Let's see what happens if I hook the radio up to the exhaust. He did that last year with Hassan. He wanted Hassan to be something other than what he was. What happened last night is the defense ran out of "gas" playing at this stylish pace. Does he have ADD? Just stop. You've got a savvy but old point guard. You've got one of the GREAT big men left in the modern NBA. The first can't run at that pace anymore; the second you shouldn't want to run up and down the court. You want him planted right in the paint blocking those greyhounds like a brick wall. You into cars? Go tinker on that. Don't tinker with this team.
Pitt plays its fourth game (of nine) against a ranked team this Saturday at Virginia. So far (today's ranking): #14 PSU (L), #9 UCF (L), #22 Syracuse (W), #3 Notre Dame (L). Virginia is #23 and a 7.5 point favorite.

Monday, October 29, 2018

God damn the pusher. Excremento, the "Kinks," went into American Airlines Arena in Miami and beat the "Heat 123-133. Let's look at the box score and piece together this embarrassment. Un momento por favor...

Balanced scoring for Sac, 3 guys with 20+ and one with 19. What immediately stands out is the stat line for W. Cauley-Stein, their center, he who would play opposite Hassan Whiteside. W. had a Hassan game, a team high 26 points on 11/17 and 13 rebounds (11). Now, what did Hassan do? Well, shiver my timbers, Hassan had a Hassan game too! (?) 16 points, 24 rebounds (19), 5 blocks but 6 TO's. Twenty four rebounds! Watafa?

The Dragon? 20 on 7/15, 4/8, 5 assists. That's good! How did Sac's PG do? 20 on 8/15, 1/2, 8 assists. That matchup wasn't the diff.

JRich had a tremendous game: 31, 10/21, 4/10. He crushed Sac's SG who had 8, 3/7, 2/4.

WTF????

Sacramento won by 10, I don't see a 10 point Sac advantage here. Kelly Olynyk got eaten alive at PF by N. Bjelica. N had 19 to Kelly's 3. That's a 16 point swing West. Maybe that was it.

The benches were about even, I don't see a glaring difference there. What do we have? W outscored Hassan by 10 but took far more shots. Oh! Sac had two shooting guards. One, Ian Shumpert, sucked with only 8 points but the other, B. Hield had 23. Add those together and you get 31, which is what Josh had.

Boy, it looks very much like it came down to the disparity in the PF's. N's 19 to Kelly's 3. WHO THE FUCK IS N. BJELICA?! Fucking game winner is who N. was tonight. FUCK ME!

Miami led by 11 after 1Q, seems like a familiar stat after 1 but over the next 2 Sac chilled the "Heat" by a +22 and Miami only got one point back in the 4Q.

Sac shot a very uncharacteristic 49.5% against the "Heat." That is putrid defense by Miami and the "Heat" only shot 41%. Ah, that's the diff. Miami didn't play D. That is going to frost the balls of Erik Spoelstra and Pat Riley.

Very disappointing game from the "Heat." They had won two in a row and I thought they were jelling. This was a terrible step back. They are the definition of mediocrity after six games, 3-3.
Klay broke the record, okay, broke the record for made threes with his 14th with 4:53 left in the 3Q. I mean...That is just STOOPID, that is insane. Credit the United Center crowd in Chi, they cheered Klay on. They knew. They were Witnesses. Just amazing that team. Klay, Steph, KD, Draymond, and Steve Kerr coaching them. I don't know what to say.
Jeezie peezie. Ells and Gees Klay Thompson just broke the NBA record for made three point baskets in a game that was held by, who else, his teammate the Elf Magician Steph Curry. Klay has 52 points at this writing with 1:18 to go in the game and Golden Pond up on the Fat Cows 145-20.

That is the most extraordinary team in history. They are just mind-boggling.
The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
When worn by soccer players
Make them look crazy, drunk or high
I see friends who should only ever wear sky blue!
Look like Donald Trump

Premier League

This is a good race this season.
Look at that: five points between #1 and #5; #1 and #2 separated only on goal difference and #3 only two points behind. So close that City actually entered today's match in third place because Liverpool and Chelsea played this weekend. If anything like this holds, it is going to be a helluva title race.

No red rose in view...
I see skies of blue...

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -Someone is having a little fun with the Cleveland Browns' decision to fire Head Coach Hue Jackson by getting into Wikipedia and listing who his successor will be.

According to the site, Baker Mayfield is listed as the 20th Browns head coach.

Tyronn Lue is not the only clueless coach in Cleveland and may not be the only one to be shown the door.

The NFL "Browns" lost their third in a row in Pittsburgh today. They are 2-5-1 on the season which admittedly is better than the "Cavaliers" record on the season under Lue. The "Browns" head coach who has led them into the rarefied Cleveland air of 2-5-1 is Hue Jackson. Hue, introduce yourself.

Hue, stop introducing yourself because you look clueless when you do. That is Google's actual avatar photograph of Hue.

Hue has an all-time head coaching record of 11-47-1 but as coach of the "Browns" Hue is a less robust 3-36-1. A telling indication of the confidence in Hue that exists universally is offered by the wiseacre who doctored Hue's Wikipedia entry, viz:
Keen pageviewers will note that the the 2018 season is far from complete. The wiseacre however is confident that Hue will go oh-for-the-rest-of-the-season and merrily close 2018 2-13-1. Which, as you can see from Hue's undoctored record in Cleveland, would still qualify as "drastic improvement."

Despite the current drastic improvement the "Browns" have still lost three in a row and, Lue-like, are looking rather incompetent doing it. This look of incompetence, and the look of cluelessness in Hue's photo, are looks seen, it now becomes our disagreeable duty to record, by Hue's offensive coordinator, Todd Haley. There are mischievous reports about that there is "tension" between Hue and Todd, they have been "at odds," Hue and Todd have been, this odd tension is allegedly "caused by dysfunction" of the offense, secondarily by the trauma induced by Hue's offer last week to "help" with the offense. Strangely the "respect for each other is not good enough for the team to be successful," Hue's and Todd's ain't.

When you look into Lake Mistake you don't expect to see swans swimming, you expect to see flaming water and turds and algae bloom and all manner of dysfunction that a lake can effect and as I, Benjamin Harris, look into Lake Mistake at this particular juncture in the rent fabric of space-time I fully expect to see Hue swimming after Lue out of town anytime now.

Cleveland "Cavaliers" Fire Head Coach Tyronn Lue

After four years as head coach, four trips to the Finals, one championship and after an 0-6 start to this season Ty Lue was sent packing today.

I don't think anybody thought Lue was a great coach, he was the right coach to replace David Blatt and I did think he did a great job during the LeBron era, in getting out of the way if nothing else but I think Lue's coaching was exposed this year. This team is absolutely dreadful, cLUEless if you will, disorganized, undisciplined, and unprepared. Someone wrote that Cleveland is not even playing like an NBA team this year, they have fallen that far that quickly. During LeBron's time the organization could wait it out knowing that LeBron's talent and will would eventually overcome all things but, my God, that team did not even practice last year until they were called on it by the media. That is how Ty Lue could do things during the LeBron era. You cannot just roll 'em out with this team. You have to actually coach them, really coach them and actually coaching, really coaching was never Ty Lue's strong suit.

11:10 pm

Closer than expected in upstate NY. Sometimes that happens when you import a victim. You get out to a big lead early, relax, put in the scrubs and suddenly...The outmanned "Chanticleers" or whatever they're called crept back in it but talent and depth almost always prevail and Syracuse hung on to beat North Carolina State, who can now go back to their league and play James Madison and Georgia State, 51-41.

#14 Washington State beat #24 Stanford in an Asia-Pacific Athletic Conference tilt 41-38.

The California “Golden Water Buffaloes" beat #15 Washington in an exciting 12-10 contest nobody cares.

Mississippi State beat #16 Texas A&M 28-13 among the cow bells. The SEC continues to cannibalize itself.

Returning to basketball Miami is now 3-2 after beating Portland 120-111 in the Magic City...but. But they almost gave the game away, trailed in fact 106-103 with 3:07 left to play. But-but, Dragic, BOOM!, Richardson, BOOM!, Dragic BOOM!, McGruder, BOOM!, four straight bombs from distance in the final two and a half minutes saved the night.

Miami led by 11 after one and by 15 at the half. For the second game this season, the bad guys' point guard abused Goran Dragic. Statistically Dragic had a great game, a team high 28, 10/19, 4/9, 4/5, 3 assists, but apparently there is no "D" in Goran's game for his opposite, Damian Lillard, was nearly transcendent: 42 points on 15/28 shooting, 5/11 from range, 7/7 free throws, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.

Hassan Whiteside only had 5 points on 8 shots but Hassan continues to dominate inside, especially on the defensive end. He blocked 6 shots and had 16 'bounds, 13 of them off Portland misfires.

Rodney McGruder had another solid game, 14, 5/10, 1/3, 3/3, 9 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Josh Richardson hit that huge three but had a JRich night: 11, 5/15, 1/3, 0/1, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, a steal, a block, 2 TO's.

DWade was the star in the 1Q and finished with an efficient 19 in 21' on 7/12, 4/6.

The point is point. That's two games in five the Dragon has gotten hammered, one of them a loss and this one, too close.

I have put this off as long as I can: good night. SEND DRUGS.

I don't like when major college tackle football schools play lower-division schools just to get an easy W. Nebraska did it to Bethune-Cookman today 45-9 in Lincoln and tonight Syracuse is "playing" Division IAA North Carolina State in Syracuse. The "Orangemen" are up 24-7 at end 1Q.

The #7 Silver Britches beat the F out of #9 FU in Jax 36-17. You don't see futility like this in a winner very often but this was Georgia after FU fumbled at their own one yard line:

#12 Kentucky won at Mizzou 15-14.

#17 PSU beat #18 Iowa in Moonie Valley 30-24.

Northwestern beat the snot out of the #20 "Boogers" in Illinoise 31-17. That's three losses in eight games for Paul Chryst's team.

Houston, unranked but 7-1, bull-whipped South Florida, 21st ranked and now also 7-1, 57-36 in Cow Town.

Iowa State, 4-3, beat 5-3 Texas Tech 40-31 in Ames. Great year for the "Cyclops."

UMass was an intended victim today. Fortunately for the "Minutemen" they were chosen by UConn. The "Poodles" don't victimize anybody. UMass won 22-17 in East Hartford.

5-3 Michigan State beat 4-4 Purdue in East Spartak 23-13.

Galls me: 6-2 Virginia beat UNC 31-21 in Charlottesville to leave the "Heels" 1-6 on the season with their sole win being over...

Pain Day 8

After a Saturday at the office normal people look forward to the night and being horizontal on a nice comfortable mattress. S-l-e-e-p, Ah!

No Ah! for moi.

I dread the night now. For some reason being horizontal for an extended period increases the pain. Which is why the undersigned went to the the office today. No place to lie down there. That, and the Purple Palace smells like a poorly ventilated Gold's Gym. The bedding is soaked with sweat. (Ladies, if this is proving too exciting, the worst is over.)

This nerve pain is just the opposite of muscular pain: sitting used to kill my back--which is why I have emulated Chairman Mao on his kang bed for years. Now, it's being in bed that kills me. There has not been a night during this god...blessed week-plus that I have not gotten up in the middle of the night and not experienced the worst pain of the 24 hours. I have no choice: I must do the exercises to ease the pain if I am to fall back asleep but the exercises are so painful to perform after a few hours of being recumbent that I can't do them as when I'm fully awake. So I have taken to doing them while soaking in a hot tub of water. Try going back to sleep after that!

And now cometh the night again.

Boyzee Idaho, Boston College drove the ball from their own three down to the Miam-Uh 27 where they missed a field goal. But the beauty part if "Pigeons" are your thing is that they drained 7:15 off the clock! Miam-Uh-oh needed two touchdowns and only had five and a half minutes to do it. They didn't. They got stopped on downs two more times! Got stopped on downs at their own 46 with 4:55 left. Held; B.C. punted them down to their 17, took over with 3:05 left and got stopped again on 4th and 8 from their 31. Miami's last three possessions of the game were stopped on downs! 27-14 the final. Not a good look tonight by Miam-Uh, not a good look 'tall.
Boy. Miam-Uh had a first and goal at the Boston College 9 yard line and damn if the "Pigeons" didn't hold 'em. Gained six yards on the first down play, too. They had three downs to get three yards: and failed. Second and goal from the three they lost a yard. Third and goal from the four they gained the yard back. Fourth and goal from the three they eschewed they threw incomplete. B.C. with the ball now at their own 19, up 27-14, 11:15 left 4Q.
