Alright, as the whole American sporting world knows, in last night's NFL game in Cleveland against Pittsburgh there was a mindless fight with :08 left in the game and Cleveland leading 21-7. Cleveland's Myles Garrett hit Pittsburgh's quarterback, Mason Rudolph, just as Rudolph delivered the ball, nothing wrong with that hit..but then Garrett "followed through," bear hugged Rudolph to the turf. The wrapping up and falling on Rudolph certainly was a penalty, for unnecessary roughness. But then...Rudolph took umbrage and tried to take Garrett's helmet off as they wrestled on the ground. Rudolph was unsuccessful. Garrett then stood up and as he did grabbed and jerked the facemask of Rudolph's helmet and pulled the whole helmet off. Rudolph's head was now completely unprotected. Another "Steeler" pushed Garrett, who was now carrying the helmet as a weapon, away from Rudolph. Rudolph got up and went after Garrett while another "Steeler" tried to tear him, now so vulnerable, away. Garrett then reached over the "Steeler" who was trying to keep him back and in a violent, chopping motion hit Rudolph on the bare head with the helmet. Rudolph was not injured. The cavalry came. Garrett was pushed to the ground and "Steelers" were punching and kicking him in his (helmeted) head, it was real ugly. No one was hurt. The American sporting world went NUTS! A crime. An historical suspension from the league. It was unanimous. (except for me)
I didn't write about it before now because, despicable me, I didn't think it was all that. Maybe I've been a criminal defense attorney too long and since no one got hurt it wasn't that big a deal.
Be that as it may, the NFL today did levy an historic suspension on Garrett, an indefinite suspension at least through the remainder of this season (six games) and any post-season Cleveland may have and into next season until Garrett meets with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Pittsburgh's Maurkice Pouncey was suspended for three games for punching and kicking Garrett when Garrett was down and Cleveland's Larry Ogunjobi was suspended for one game.
This is the first part of the play:
