The Most Evil

I have been able to approximate my first reading of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. I made a margin note on page 233, "Beijing." So, at latest, 2012; I stopped writing seriously on China about then. I must have been interested in comparing on evilness grounds Maoist China, Stalinist Russia (I also have a bio on Stalin) and Nazi Germany. Those three are grouped by historians as the axis of evil of the 20th century although Hitler is given pride of first place is my general understanding.

Upon re-read there is no comparison. I have had the thought recur to me in the last few weeks, "It's like he was hell-sent." "Heaven sent" is a phrase, "hell sent" should be. Jesus was born in a manger; Hitler, the "Austrian corporal" was not even eligible to be chancellor of Germany until he got the constitution changed. Both must have been among the unlikeliest men on earth to become Charismatic Leaders. Yet both did. It begs otherworldly agency. Hitler is like nothing other than the Devil incarnated on earth. Just this from page 240, which I dog-eared, I have underlined nearly the entire page, I have marked nine passages with stars. The articles for the "National Reich Church":

1. The National Reich Church of Germany categorically claims the exclusive right and the exclusive power to control all churches within the borders of the Reich...
...
5. The National Church is determined to exterminate irrevocably the strange and foreign Christian faiths imported into Germany in the ill-omened year 800.
...
13. The National Church demands immediate cessation of the publishing and dissemination of the Bible in Germany...

14. The National Church declares that to it, and therefore to the German nation...the Fuehrer's Mein Kampf is the greatest of all documents. ...
...
18. The National Church will clear away from its altars all crucifixes, Bibles and pictures of saints.

19. On the altars there must be nothing but Mein Kampf (to the German nation and therefore to God the most sacred book) and to the left of the altar a sword.
...
30. On the day of its foundation, the Christian Cross must be removed from all churches, cathedrals and chapels...and it must be superseded by the only unconquerable symbol, the swastika.
