Inspector Bucket, fictional character, the detective who solves the mystery of the novel Bleak House (1852–53) by Charles Dickens. For Dickens’s 19th-century readers, Inspector Bucket’s colourless but skillful and decent methods became the standards by which to judge all policemen. He has been called the first important detective in English literature. Husky and middle-aged, with a friendly and honest appearance, Bucket is by temperament philosophical and tolerant of human follies.
