Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), a moderate, said today telescopically that House R’s are divided between Reagan conservatives and Trump populists with each able to thwart the other but neither able to put forward an agreed Speaker.

This guy says the same thing:

“Right now, I think it is apparent to the American people that the GOP conference is hopelessly divided,” said Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.). “Can it be overcome? Never say never. But the signs are, right now, that this conference is at some kind of an impasse.”

And this guy:

A visibly frustrated Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) put it another way, calling out the conservative who originally moved to oust McCarthy: “Are we screwed? Ask Matt Gaetz that question.”

I think they’re all right and I don’t see any way they can come up with a Speaker on their own.

The point of me posting this is that if there is going to be a governing coalition in the House of Representatives, it is going to have to be a center coalition with centerish Republicans and center Democrats. A government shutdown is exactly what Gaetz and Jordan have wanted all along and they’re fine with the R caucus being so split that no legislation can get passed. They are winning.
