What Dion says at the end of this video, "We've not figured this out yet?" is so true. What the hell, we can't make safe menstruation products for women? From memory, I have never told anybody this story and now I am about to tell it to Dion World. I grew up in a very small town and my family, Dion's paternal line, goes back to the American Revolution. Yes, Dion is a D.A.R. When Dion mentioned the shame occasioned by women's periods, I was, poignantly, reminded of this story. I only saw my maternal grandmother, so Dion's great grandmother, cry once. She was in her 70's, sixty years after the fact. A local girl had her first period and didn't know what it was, she had never been told. She only knew that it was shameful. So she went down to the acid mine drainage-polluted river that ran through town, a river known as the "Sulfur Creek" (It was in the school fight song.), more crudely (but more accurately) the "Shit Crick", for it was an open sewer. The girl washed herself off in that, too ashamed to go home with period stains. She got an infection and died from it. I can still see in my mind's eye the contorted, pained look on my grandmother's face as she told me this story crying. So, yeah. We put a man on the moon in the 20th century but we didn't figure out how to make safe menstrual products. Ima cry now.
