This is key to understanding the Magat mindset. In fact, it is as American as our Revolution. Magats, like the Revolutionary generation, are mentally ill, specifically paranoid and conspiratorial. In their affliction they see evidence in the absence of evidence. Their illness requires indirection. Give them a direct statement of fact and they won't believe it. Conspiracy abhors fact. Hide something from them and they will race into the void with their fantasies. Thus, when Bondi wrote "there is no client list" (especially after she had said that the client list was "sitting on my desk right now"), Magats had everything that their condition requires to turn on their man. But, tell them that a legacy media, unique in reputation for accuracy of reporting fact, has direct evidence in their man's own hand, and they storm the ramparts to destroy the idol.
