XIII-IX +18

"And then you get to the fucking last game of the season and blow it against the shittiest fucking team in the fucking world." XIII-IX WVU fullback Owen Schmitt, on XIII-IX +10.😁

Same stadium, same 'Eers head coach, same fans. Pitt is -7.5.

13-9 is the most heartbreaking loss in sports history and can’t be topped

I’m excited to have the Brawl back tonight. With it in the spotlight, I wanted to offer this hot take.

Because of the vastly unique circumstances of 13-9, I don’t think that loss can ever be topped from a heartbreak perspective in any team sport scenario.

A team 1 win away from reaching the national title

That same team has never won it all, and has fairly average history of success otherwise.

All that’s stopping the team from reaching the championship is a win over a major rival who is terrible

The team ultimately loses to their rival, who was a 4 touchdown underdog.

That would be like Duke losing to UNC in the final four if UNC was like a 14 seed. But even that’s not accurate, because at that point hypothetical 14 seed UNC would be on a hot Cinderella run and everyone would be taking them seriously.

When will a scenario like 13-9 happen again? There’s no other situation in sports that I can think of where you can be 1 win over a fairly awful team away from reaching a championship game. And to make it worse for WVU, that fairly awful team happened to be our bitter rival. And there is no realistic indication we’ll ever get back to contending for a title.

Can any sports heartbreak top that?
