I didn’t think Pitt football was going to be all that interesting this season. Mason Heintschel changed my mind. He is must-watch television. The jump pass against the grain for a touchdown [the one I posted like 11 screenshots of] the other day was a perfect example. He looks like a budding star to me. I have compared him to a slightly taller Johnny Football [Johnny Manziel]. He can make the broken play, but he can also stand in the pocket and deliver.
The kid’s 18 years old but plays with uncommon confidence. He needs to take care of the ball a little better, but I’ll trade the mistakes for the magic any day.
I agree with everything that Joe Starkey writes here. I didn't think of the Johnny Manziel comparison, and I could kick myself for not, although it was so long ago. He has been out of American football since 2015. Manziel won the Heisman Trophy in 2012. I would add one other comparison between the two: Manziel's impact on the Texas DEI program was akin to snorting a line of cocaine every day of the season. He fucking ELECTRIFIED the team--and the country! Mason?
Dude, you get the players and the coaches laughing with you, you got somethin'.
There just seemed to be nothing Manziel could not do, and when the walls closed in and it seemed for certain that he would be sacked and end up in a body bag he would pull a Great Escape, not only from physical harm, but football catastrophe. Manziel, and Mason the Magician through two games, snatch victory from the asshole of defeat, as in that ridiculous "NO, NO, NO, NO, YES!" TD pass. Manziel was the Captain of Chaos and Mason is the Master of the Maelstrom.
