OH! The first youtube video I saw was by Paul Robeson so I listened to that. Robeson annunciates very distinctly and the version of the first stanza he sung was,
Oh! The sun shines bright on my old Kentucky home,
Tis' summer, the *darkies* are gay,
The corn-top's ripe and the meadow's in the bloom,
Whilst the birds make music all the day.
I'm confused. "Darkies" was not in the sheet music I read as a kid, no way. That would have been in the early to mid-1960's. And Robeson...When would Robeson have recorded that song?, he's been dead a long time. From the sound of it, it seems like a '40's song. WHY would Paul Robeson have recorded that song with those lyrics?
Now I gotta do researches again. Can't even listen to a song in peace. And on peaceful Sunday, too.
