"The Epicenter" is another on the front page. The epicenter of the epicenter for central Queens was the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in New York City which was the epicenter of the national outbreak.
New York City is dying. There will be other viruses when this one is gone. COVID has revealed, as nothing else has, that the city is unsustainable. Many of the ultra-wealthy, upon whom 42% of city tax revenue depends, have moved out. Projections made in July were for a 10% drop in tax revenue from fiscal 2020 to fiscal 2021. How’s it looking now, Apples? The city's subway system is looking at cutting service by 40%. And now a late fall/winter surge in cases. Will the ultra-rich come back? When? Why?
Those buildings are so tall for being built on the backs of the non-wealthy. The non-wealthy are moving out. Will they come back? Not a chance. Why would they? The city was always hard. You already had to walk three blocks just to do your laundry. But this? The city is unlivable. Now you're laid off, couldn't get to your job even if you still had one and are locked down in a living space shared with family members in a building of cramped quarters. You're going to get sick and they did and some died and the living moved out and the tall buildings got a little shorter with each back gone. The virus is the great leveler and it has leveled New York City.
