Pilgrim’s Way is “an essay in recollection.” Memory is fallible. Over repeated readings I looked up the most humorous part of the book to me, the “Scottish Church case”, read the arguments before the judges and found that Buchan’s memory was wrong! Just now a passage impressed me that never had previously. Buchan quotes one of the “noble scriptural cadences” of the Bible, “the mountains that ‘clapped their hands.’” Lovely, no? I could see that mountains could be made to seem hand-shaped, hands clap, mountains clap! Beautiful! So I looked it up. Isaiah 55:12, ‘the
trees of the
field shall clap their hands.’ Psalm 98:8, ‘Let the
rivers clap their hands.’ Human, very human.
