I asked my son, "How do the fan blades look through your handheld camera?" So he tried it out and sent me the vid with the comment, "It's even weirder." I didn't see much difference from the reality captured on security cam and on his iPhone. We then went back to doing our own things. A couple of hours later:
This is interesting: when I use my phones “slow mo” camera option it starts off at full speed and all blades are visible at their actual speed. Slow mo does have a faster shutter/frame rate speed so it was able to capture the actual fan speed.
He sent me the video and wrote,
You can only see it in the first second or two before Slow Mo kicks in
On my phone, in the video he sent me, the blades are slo-mo in the beginning and then for a split second spin much, much faster before the video on my phone, the one he sent me, goes back to slow mo. I didn't respond. I was so confused. A minute later he wrote,
Wait…woah. It’s different now that I sent it to you. You can see the actual speed on my phone but when I open up the video in imessage it must drop quality and therefore negates the effect.
Very, extremely fucked up. You know the old philosophy debate on the real: what humans see? what dolphins see? Bats? Falcons? Here, all from the human viewpoint but with different virtual sight and in different mediums--And you get different views of reality. It is so fucked up.
