So smitten was I upon first viewing that I immediately went out and bought a CD with Wasis Diop's dreamy Everything is Never Quite Enough. The word "enough" has since become a concept core to my thinking about America, and which I found also in a traditional Chinese story.
On that CD I heard Diop's hymn to Africa, Colobane. More than any other song on the album, including Everything is Never Quite Enough, Colobane struck me deeply. It, Everything is Never Quite Enough, and The Thomas Crowne Affair (1999) have stuck with me ever since.
