Joshua Steinglass notes that Trump himself has, several times in several places, “admitted” that the payments to Cohen were reimbursements, not payments for legal services. This would not be a devastating argument if the defense had proposed an alternative theory of the case. But given that the defense has argued the $420,000 sent to Cohen was in fact a payment for legal services, these admissions from Trump himself are not good for the former president and his legal team.
