Picture the country of the United States as a person's body. Cleveland is a pimple on the asshole of the body. The rest of the country doesn't pay it any mind most of the time. It's embarrassing to have. The person-country don't show it to others. It irritates sometimes, but can usually be ignored. But you want the whole person-country to "acknowledge" the infection--as indeed it has done, has been forced to do by outbreaks of the Cleveland bacteria-people for 31 years. You want recognition that this infection on the asshole is the most hideous that a person-country can have, the number one in ugliness.
The Cleveland bacteria-people inside the pimple become inflamed from time to time. They threaten to burst and spread their poison into the bloodstream and throughout the person-country. The bacteria demand that we look at our asshole, and at them, and put salve on them to make it, and them, forgettable again. And they demand that we show everybody else this grossness that is our shame and our curse.
We're not going to do that, Mr. Watkins.
