Beyond a reasonable doubt Antetokounmpo will stay in 🍺. And the notion that Riley would get Ja Morant if not Antetokounmpo has had an ice cold 🍺 thrown on it also. Miami offered "nothing of value" to Memphis.
No Whale, no grizzly shark with a gun, NOTHING as the clock strikes 15 hrs to the end of the trade window. By all lights Riley is standing pat once agayne. That is the unkindest cut.
It appears Pat Riley tried with Antetokounmpo. Everyone on the roster except Bam Adebayo was offered for Milwaukee to choose five. There's the rub. Riley wanted Milwaukee's best player without offering his own in a trade that would have been one of similars. Riley would not give up a three-time all-star to get a ten-time all-star; wouldn't give up a player with 0 all-nba selections but as one of his nine; put off limits a player who has five all-defensive team selections for one who also has five; wouldn't trade a player with 0 MVP's for one who has two; wouldn't trade a player with 0 NBA titles for one who has 1.
One of Riley's adages is "hard work guarantees you nothing, but without it you don't stand a chance." In this case however Riley does not get an "A" for effort. In coming back to shore with no Whale or even a big fish, Riley has bruised the psyche of his young, 43-win team. As happened last season with the Jimmy Butler drama. That team promptly lost sonething like 10 straight games. Riley and his lap dog Spoelstra will spout the company line of "it's a business, you can't let it effect you", but that is so much pablum. A third of the team was part of Riley's offer, were however close to leaving for the frozen tundra. "Guys, we love you! A momentary infatuation, was all the Giannis business was. And now it's over! Wee! Back to your nose to the grindstones, slaves! You ESPECIALLY, Kel'el!"
Human beings don't function that way. We'll see how they function in the remaining thirty games. Optimism is unwarranted, but in the short term and the long.
