The attacks of September 11, 2001 resulted in America the panoptic state. The attacks changed America's soul. The soul of America had been the pursuit of happiness. It is less so now. The soul of America now has become more fearful where it had been more fearless, defensive where it had been offensive, less confident where it had been more confident. America did not respond to Islam's sneak attack as it had Japan's. After Pearl Harbor America declared war on Japan. After 9/11 America did not even know who was responsible, then settled on Al Qaeda, specifically excluding Islam. There was no declaration of war, no war at all except against "Terrorism." America began spying on, a defensive war-like measure, Americans. And Germans, Brazilians, everyone.
