"Stunning" 🚨

And that's it in Lose-ee-ana, the Troy "Spartans" hung on to beat the "Bayou Bengal Tigers" 24-21.

Troy leads LSU(25) 24-14 with 4:45 left in the exam. The LSU's have the ball but they're also on their own 12 yard line and it's 4th down. O (Matt) Canada!

Notice:

It has come to the belated attention of the undersigned that one Giancarlo Stanton, aka "Mike" but he prefers Giancarlo, has hit 59 home runs in the sport of baseball and plays for the Miami "Marlins" which the undersigned is familiar with. Stanton did not hit any home runs tonight and has one game left, manana as we say in Miami to tie Babe Ruth or Roger Maris, the only two non-steroid enhanced players in baseball history to hit more.

Why Does Rice Play?

Man Rice blows. 42-10 Beloveds 4 and change left...4 and change is prolly about how many people are in the stadium too.
God dang. Tackle football is just too LONG! Pitt kicked off at noon NPT and there's still 9 minutes left in the game! City kicked off at 12:30 and the match has been over for half an hour.

Pitt 28 Rice 10, start 4Q

Rice is covering! Make that wager now!

Full-Time

City go to Stamford Bridge and knock it down. 1-0 final. CITY FOREVER!!!!

Chelsea 0, City 1. 84'

There was a time he wore a different shade of blue. Oh, how @ChelseaFC must be regretting the fact they let @DeBruyneKev slip through their fingers. @ManCity

Oh my God, I FORGOT about that. Yes, Kev played for Chelsea and Mou got rid of him!

DeBruyneeee!

1-0 City, 67th minute

Pitt 28 Rice 0, Chelsea 0 City 0. HT

If you haven't placed your wager on Rice to cover, DON'T. Pitt 21-0, 8:30 2Q.
The Russians have told Trump of various ways he can help them divide and conquer the
U.S. "It's race, stupid" is the umbrella for virtually all. Everytime Trump says or does something, tweets something, gives a speech, if we ask ourselves the question "What's in it for the Russians?" in many cases the scales will fall from our eyes. Then, Trump's seeming out-of-nowhere attacks on NFL players, his suggestion that fans boycott games, his White House disinvite of NBA champion Golden State, his praise of NASCAR and his invite to NHL champs Pittsburgh--it's all about race. More importantly, if we ask ourslves that question will not be taken by surprise and can respond with more effectively. That last is still giving me trouble and I'll come back to its. Most importantly, if we ask ourselves a variant of that question, "What new topic would I pick if I were Putin and wanted to sew chaos and divide and conquer the U.S.?" we can predict and take prophylactic action.

"And you lynch Negroes." That is tu quoque, tu quoque is a logical fallacy, "fake argument," we can say, and you would lose in the Oxford Debating Union employing tu quoque...But we're not in the Oxford Debating Union and tu quoque is highly effective with Russian-Americans. Like his mentors Trump has always been extraordinarily vulnerable to attack. But, by lying, the Big Lie is the Communist strategy of first resort, and by employing fake arguments like ad hominem attacks ("low energy," "little," "Rocket Man") of which tu quoque is a subset, Trump has so far deflected all frontal assaults and counter-punched devastatingly. Truth has not been antitote to lie nor logical argument to illogical fallacy.

How do we counter Trump? Fight illogic with illogic? Go toe-to-toe with him fallacy for fallacy? Match hatred with hatred? Trump and Bannon go as low need requires. This is "war" Bannon says. Elizabeth Warren got under Trump's skin by mercilessly mocking him. Be indirect rather than direct? Humor? On that last, Trump has no sense of humor, can not STAND to be laughed at or made fun of. Jon Stewart got to him most of all: Fuckface von Clownstick.

Since "war" is being waged by Putin-Trump-Bannon, in my opinion, we need to go total: direct and frontal, indirect guerilla, financial, legal, we must war daily, we must war personally, we must go after Trump's family, particularly Ivanka, we must ruin Russia's economy, destroy Trump's businesses, we must go after Trump supporters, we must lie, be scurrilous, we must hate. We must overwhelm Putin-Trump from so many different directions simultaneously that it is impossible to counter-punch. We must launch the real-life equivalent of a DoS attack.

Where The Don Kim Show?

Moved on to another town? NO! MORE! MORE! More 💥, more zoom, more pow! "Lunatic!" "Rocket Man!"...I forgot! "ABACUS BEADS!" WE WANT MORE ABACUS BEADS! WE WANT MORE ABACUS BEADS! DON KIM! DON KIM!

Investment Advice: Unbidden

Pitt is a twenty point favorite to cook Rice tomorrow?...Man. I don't see that based on the season so far. I hope Vegas is right...Cats and dogs, if any yinz are "investor" types, I gotta recommend
you put a nickel on Rice to cover. Game kicks off at noon. LET'S. GO. PITT!

Noontime 'bouts gonna be a hot time for moi...Oh shit, maybe not. I planned on working. FUCK!...Anyway while the colonies eyes are glued (ahem) to Pitt-Rice, across the pond there will be a coupla besotted blokes eating pies and casting a gander at the telly as champions Swine Chelsea host God's Righteous Angels in Purple in London Town. One Sergio "Kun" AGUEROOO! will not be donning the becoming blue/red away kit of the Angels. Kun spent an (APPROVED!) day off yesterday in Amsterdam taking in a concert. His taxi driver got into an accident and wrecked the car but fuck that who cares and Kun broke a fucking rib. Out 2-4 weeks. FUHSHOOK. No, Pep is right, no excuses, beat me, whip me, we gotta play the Arch Angel Gabriel. Jesus. But, taking the pragmatic "investor's" view of the tableau, is City going to go undefeated this year? Probably not, right? Maybe but probably NOT. So I'da put a coupla pence on Chelsea if I were a bettin' fella (and I iz). Kickoff there is 12:30 Normal People Time. C'MON CITEH!

America Not Working

It seems to me that America is tired. Exhausted. We seem to be overwhelmed. Running in place. Drowning.

I contend that the soul of America was changed by 9/11, that Americans went from being an extroverted, optimistic, can-do people to an introverted, paranoid, do-I-have-to? people. The old soul of America was the pursuit of happiness. America's post-9/11 soul seems to me more like China's: survival. In both China and America, survival as the soul is absurd. Neither country's survival is in danger. But for both peoples "the animating principle" seems to me survival.

Maybe Americans are tired of the pursuit of happiness.

You are looking at the most astounding scene in the history of Major League Soccer. On
September 16 Atlanta United FC opened the spectacular Mercedes Benz stadium against "arch rival" Orlando City. In this one the bottom line was not the 3-3 draw but the 70,000 who packed the venue. 70,00 people for a domestic soccer match in America 2.0. And in Atlanta! Where sports franchises go to die in humiliation. Amazing.

My doubts about MLS' business model are taking body blows. That attendance is real. Atlanta United is real. Los Angeles Galaxy, Seattle, Portland, Toronto, Orlando City, New York City, New York Red Bulls, they are all heavily supported. And next year, a new franchise that will set a new standard: Los Angeles Football Club.

Shatter the House of Mirrors:
A Conference Report on Russian In uence Operations

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Vladimir Putin’s Russia is engaged in a well- nanced and determined campaign to undermine democratic political and social institutions as well as international alliances, and to remove resistance to Russia’s foreign policy objectives. Russia has the motive and the means to do so.

Russia’s motives are clear. Putin resents the collapse of the Soviet Union and seeks to restore Russia’s lost empire in order to give the Russian government a freer hand at home and abroad. Russia’s intervention in the American election was part of a broader effort to undermine con dence in Western democracies and the credibility of Western institutions; weaken trans-Atlantic relationships, including NATO; diminish the international appeal of the United States as well as reduce American power abroad; reassert Russian power; and, ultimately, protect Putin’s regime from the threat of people power.

The means at Russia’s disposal include: of cial Russian state-organs, such as its intelligence services, that have a long history of conducting such operations; state controlled media outlets, such as RT and Sputnik which are propaganda arms whose narratives seep into Western media coverage; and Russian-controlled bots and trolls in social media that engineer the trends and popularity of both individuals and narratives. Russia has a long history of employing so-called “active measures” that by 2016 included traditional propaganda and computational propaganda, cybercrimes, as well as weaponized information—in the form of selective release of information to groups like Wikileaks. Finally, there is evidence of Russian support to and ties with the American so-called “Alt-Right,” ethno-nationalists, and secessionist movements in California and Texas, among other places—all of which serve to undermine U.S. political cohesion.

Russia’s assault on Western democracies, including the United States, exploits features of free and open societies. To ght-back, the United States must take decisive actions:

• Improve transparency and raise public awareness of the threat. Too much of the public discussion has focused on possible crimes committed by people around then- candidate Donald Trump. That focus obscures the magnitude of the challenge and the enduring nature of the threat, regardless of what happens in the investigation of the Trump team. Accordingly:

○ Congress must create an independent, bipartisan commission to establish a widely-accepted understanding of Russian actions, means, and objectives in the 2016 election.

3

Shatter the House of Mirrors

○ Among the commission’s objectives, it must look beyond the 2016 campaign and expose the activities of trolls, bots, and other foreign actors, including those that are still active today, whether in battleground states or in states with active secession movements or vulnerable to exploitation over divisive social issues.

○ The news industry must determine whether their current standards and practices allow them to identify when they are the vehicle for a propaganda campaign and expose other outlets that lack those standards.

○ Social media platforms must be regulated so that political ads and sponsored content are clearly identi ed as such and there is transparency about who is paying for that content.

○ Public and private resources must be brought to bear to fund the scholars, journalists, and investigators who will educate the American public and policymakers about a threat that has not waned.

• Prepare the executive branch for a new cold war. Organizations from the White House to the intelligence community need to be reviewed for their ef cacy in meeting the propaganda challenge to the West. The White House must communicate to Congress the need for any new authorizations to meet this threat. It must also request suf cient appropriations for these activities and prosecute these programs vigorously. The administration also must provide the diplomatic leadership required for an international response to the common challenge posed by Russian intervention in the democratic processes of the West.

• Congress must lead. In the absence of clear executive branch willingness or readiness to lead on this issue, the U.S. Congress must take the initiative. It can do
so by eliminating “dark-money” in American politics; requiring more transparency by corporations operating in the United States; embracing bipartisanship in the defense of American democracy; and reforming the laws governing the activities of foreign agents operating in the United States—to begin by considering legislative changes that would require state-sponsored media outlets, such as RT and Sputnik, to publicly reveal their sources of funding.

• Invest in the American people. We must once again consider education a national priority and the cornerstone for an effective defense of democracy. Russia exploited America’s media illiteracy, our civic illiteracy, and our historical illiteracy. Programs
to increase the public’s resistance to in uence by foreign powers should be either buttressed, expanded, or created. This is a long-term effort and one we must begin now.

The press and the American public are mistaken if they focus exclusively on the question of whether President Trump or his team colluded with Russia in the 2016 election. The Russian effort is larger than the election of a president. It seeks to sow division within the United States and within the broader community of Western democracies. While crimes need to be prosecuted if they occurred, the public should be sensitized and their attention reoriented to combat the broader Russian effort to weaken our faith in our free institutions, and undermine the political cohesion of the United States.

After a closed-door briefing for the Senate and House intelligence committees, Twitter said that it had found about 200 accounts that appeared to be linked to the Russian campaign to influence the 2016 presidential election— a small fraction of the number found by outside researchers.

"Alabama defeat leaves Trump weakened, isolated amid mounting challenges"-WaPo

Wednesday, September 27, 2017

...And then he voted for Trump.

"You make me want to be a better man."

Only one person has ever made me want to be a better man, my oldest brother.
"One comes away from reading John Berryman with an image of a little boy standing alone in a street, in the rain, crying."

The man blinked his eyes. His skin went cold and clammy. He took the pipe out of his mouth, got up off the sofa, walked through the living room of the quiet, sleeping house to the kitchen and put the magazine into the trash can.

"Russian-generated Facebook posts pushed Trump as 'only viable option'"

Posts that circulated to a targeted, swing-state audience on the social media site railed against illegal immigrants and claimed “the only viable option is to elect Trump.” They were shared by what looked like a grassroots American group called Secured Borders, but Congressional investigators say the group is actually a Russian fabrication designed to influence American voters during and after the presidential election.

“Their goal was to spread dissension, was to split our country apart, and they did a pretty good job,” said Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee.
...
At the root of the challenge are so-called “troll farms” where workers sit in rows of tables and create online profiles that push divisive messages, all aimed at sowing discord. Facebook told Congressional investigators about one operation that was especially busy during the 2016 campaign, a St. Petersburg-based firm called the Internet Research Agency.

In an interview with ABC News, Lyudmila Savchuk, who worked for the company in 2015 to expose what the factory was doing, described how young Russians posed as Americans, working 12 hour shifts at the company’s headquarters posting comments on American political issues selected by their bosses. Facebook, she said, was one of their primary platforms.

“Troll factory is a very appropriate name for it because it really is a large-scale production that works around the clock, and they don't take time off for holidays, lunch nor sleep,” she said. “A huge quantity of content is being produced.”

Facebook’s chief security officer Alex Stamos said most of the posts generated there did not mention a specific presidential candidate or the election, but focused on “amplifying divisive social and political messages” on immigration, gun rights and LGBT issues.

Sports Miscellany*

*Update.

Tom Jurich, who compromised ethics to become the greatest athletic director on the planet, and Rick Pitino, as good a basketball coach as there is, have been fired by the University of Louisville after the latest scandal, a pay-for play recruiting scheme. Ten people nationwide, including four assistant coaches, were arrested and charged by the FBI yesterday. Neither Jurich or Pitino were among them although the university is under investigation.

Tom Jurich came to UL in 1997. After forcing out Denny Crum, who had won a national championship fifteen years before, Jurich hired Pitino in 2001 after the latter resigned as head coach of the Boston Celtics. In 2013 Pitino won Louisville its second national championship.

In football Jurich accomplished a complete turn around. In 1985 he hired Howard Schnellenberger who put the school "on a collision course with the national championship." Playing as an independent they didn't quite get there but in 1990 finished 10-1-1 and 14th-ranked in the country.

Jurich's permanent impact on UL athletics was in conference realignment. In 1996 he got the "Cardinals" into Conference USA, a "mid-major" grouping. In 2001 the football team went 11-2 and was ranked 17th. After the 2002 season Jurich hired Bobby Petrino. The 2004 team was 11-1 and ranked 6th, its highest finish ever at that time.. In 2005 men's basketball and football were now well-regarded enough that the school was invited to join the Big East, one of "power" conferences in college athletics. The 2006 football team finished 12-1 and ranked 5th. Petrino left after that season and after three years of failure Jurich hired Charlie Strong. In 2012 the team finished 11-2 and ranked 13th.

The Big East Conference then imploded. Louisville had to take a major step backward and play in the new American Athletic Conference. Against inferior competition the team went 12-1, ranked 15th. Strong departed for the University of Texas. Playing a weak hand, Jurich took the university from the AAC to the ACC, the Atlantic Coast Conference. It was the greatest coup in conference realignment. A commuter school, the second university in Kentucky, was now affiliated with academic blue-bloods Duke and Notre Dame and respected schools Virginia, North Carolina, Boston College, Georgia Tech, and Pittsburgh. To start Louisville's first season in the ACC Jurich hired back sleazy, scandal-tarnished Bobby Petrino.

It has been twenty years. Tom Jurich took the University of Louisville from the outhouse to the penthouse and now back again.

Russian Tool Moore Wins in Alabama

Former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, twice booted from office for failure to obey law, a darling of Russian-influenced (see Hamilton 68) Breitbart founder and ex-Trump advisor Steven Bannon, of Sarah Palin et al, won a U.S. Senate seat in a rout of incumbent Luther Strange.

The American oblast right is reading right out of the hymnal composed by their saint, Vladimir of Moscow, who imprisoned Pussy Riot over a take-over demonstration in an Orthodox church. Judge Moore was excommunicated from the bench for having a statue of the Ten Commandments next to him. Saint Vladimir tried to keep gays out of the Sochi Olympics; Judge Moore refused to follow federal law on gay marriage. The line between church and state will be made more vague if Judge, soon-to-be-Senator, Moore has his way and the centrifugal force of anti-federalism will be enhanced. What more could Saint Vladimir want in a senator?

Moore's win is a win for Russian-inspired Trumpism, if not for Trump himself, who campaigned, somewhat equivocally, for Strange. (That, in fact, is what he was doing in Huntsville last Friday.) In Trump Putin has one of his little Twitter birds-of-chaos perched in the highest office in the land and in Moore yet another in the higher branch of the national legislature. The Russian takeover of the Republican Party proceeds apace and it will be more (intended) unable to govern, which is the point.

Putin's birds-of-a-feather could not have roosted in perches where locals were waiting for them with shotguns. In the hills and valleys of Alabama and Pennsylvania, in the swamps of Louisiana, throughout rural and suburban America North and South the flocks were greeted with feed, laid out by locals and supplied them over the years by the Tea Party, by Breitbart, Ann Coulter, and David Duke.

To China: Only You Can Stop Trump. 对中国:只有你能阻止特朗普。

You stopped the Korean War, at a cost of a million Chinese lives. In the face of a nuclear threat from MacArthur. When all you had were Chinese lives to throw at the Americans.

Do you realize that Donald Trump has threatened to commit genocide in North Korea?

Your support for the last two U.N. resolutions against the DPRK has won you Trump's thanks. Congratulations. Do you realize you have emboldened Trump? How dare you.

Only you can prevent genocide and the total destruction of the DPRK state. Zhou Enlai sided with Japan, Japan!, because the only atomic attack came in Asia? Do you want another one? When you are strong?

Only you can get Trump to stand down. "If you preemptively attack the DPRK you will be at war with us." That is what you have said previously: if the U.S. starts the shooting or attempts to affect regime change or upsets the balance of power on the peninsula, you would "prevent it." Trump needs to be told this directly by Xi. You have made it clear to Kim Jong un that you do not have his back.

Trump thinks you have his back. Do you?

He thinks you  have given him a free hand. Have you?

If not, tell him now. It is two and one-half minutes to midnight.

If you let Donald Trump do this, who then is the "paper tiger"?

The Lamps Are Going Out

It is ever clearer that Trump has made up his mind. If he turns his threat into reality and totally destroys the DPRK, that's 25,000,000 lives extinguished at the click of a button.

Of course, the DPRK will respond, if they can. Another 25,000,000 live in the Seoul Capital area; Kim could throw a nuke and extinguish them. 30,000 American troops along the DMZ: gone. That's over 50,000,000 people. 41,000,000 were killed in four years in World War I.

If Kim is able to get another nuclear missile off and it hit Japan, if it killed 10% there, we're in uncharted territory. 12,000,000 more killed, a total of 62,000,000, more than were killed in four years of World War II.

If he can launch an ICBM, who knows if he has the capability to reach Los Angeles? Ten percent there is 1,800,000.

2,000,000 were killed during the Korean War. Since armistice, 64 years ago, number of U.S. and South Korean troops killed: 130.

Kim and Trump have made up their minds.

Tweet for Twat

Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at U.N. If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won't be around much longer!
"Since the United States declared war on our country, we will have every right to make all self-defensive counter measures, including the right to shoot down the United States strategic bombers at any time even when they are not yet inside the aerospace border of our country."-DPRK Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho today.

He DOES echo Kim's thoughts so how is  "they won't be around much longer!" not a declaration of war?
