I have a question: Why do they include the "O" of "of" in their blasted acronyms? I thought you weren't supposed to do that. Is it the USOA? No! It's the USA. But JCPOA--and POTUS and SCOTUS use the first letters of the articles "of" and "the." (I actually thought the reason for that might be that they didn't want the presidential acronym to be PUS...That would be a good reason. Like CREEP, remember CREEP? The "Committee to Re-Elect the President" (Nixon, so it fit.))
POTUS is giving a speech tomorrow at American University in Washington to attempt to sell the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran to the American people and their representatives in Congress. American University...D'ya know the resonance of a presidential speech on American foreign relations delivered at American U? 1963. JFK used the occasion of American U's commencement speech to hold out an olive branch to Nikita Khrushchev and the Soviet Union eight months after coming within one-chance-in-three of vaporizing the Rooskis. It's considered maybe THE foreign policy address of JFK's 1,000 days and one of the most significant in post-WWII. I bet that resonates with POTUS Obama.
The Master of the Sand Traps (MOTST) will give some follow-up media sit-downs and then vamooses for his annual on Martha's Vineyard. Looking forward to the pitchers. Follow-up on any momentum created by the speech is left to the minions except in extremis as hisself does not want to be disturb-ed. Congress is also gettin' outta town and won't be back till September 8. POTUS wants to pressure as many as he can to come out publicly in support of the deal before his first cry of "Fore" pierces the morning air on the Vineyard so he seems to be banking on creating quite a lot of Big Mo with his Big Speech.
One man's opinion only here: No Big Mo. The speech will be good but Obama can't personally follow up, minions do not create Big Mo by virtue of being minions and this is a "conscience vote," one of the few I can remember during the Obama years, one where politics plays an unusually insignificant role. So much is already known about JCPOA that POTUS is not going to provide any info that is new, he's not even going to provide some new audacious argument that will change the complexion of the debate, all that stuff is already largely baked in. The Reps and Sens will think upon it more while they're back in their districts, study it more, consult with the experts they trust and they will hear what their constituents have to say. It's a vote of conscience, it is the most important foreign policy issue most of them have ever voted on, POTUS hisself will say at American it's the most important f.p. vote since the congressional authorization for war in Iraq.
Congress' constituents will also be listening to the deal's opponents, they will have no choice but to listen because the Israel Lobby alone is spending about $27 million in TV ads. Netanyahu has filmed and aired already a passionate anti-deal ad or address so American Jews will also have that to digest.
One man's additional opinion: It would be better for Obama's prospects if he would go on a nationwide tour and speak in city after city (where bothe people are, after all) rather than give one speech in D.C. and a few network interviews. If minds can be changed, and the minds of the people clearly can, even I have a slightly open mind, I'm against the deal but I'll listen to the president. I won't write a letter to my congressperson or senators but if the truly unexpected happened and I changed my mind I would do it right here. That would reach 100 people a day, minuscule, but more than one letter to one congressman and two Senators would do. So, I think as a strategic matter Earnest Josh is not going to change anybody's mind but that suits me fine!
When Congress gets back on September 8 they will only have until the 17th to vote on this thing and I will be one shocked mother-fucker if there's anything Obama does in those nine days that will change Reps and Sens minds after they've had a month of getting an earful from everybody else.
This is going to be a close vote and one man's final opinion: Ahead of tomorrow's speech the White House minions have been saying that this should be a "no-brainer" vote. It is NOT a no-brainer vote, brains are in good faith working in overdrive on this and calling it a no-brainer is an annoying, tone-deaf, pretty arrogant, presumptuous thing to say to people who are taking this very seriously and doing their level best to do what's right by their lights. The Whitey's should lose their arrogance and shut the fuck up.
