I’m breaking my New Year’s resolution which I just recommitted to. I don’t think I can mess this up it’s so short.

Tomorrow night is the national championship game in college tackle football. Who knew? It’s like the fifteenth leading story on ESPN. Actually, 21st. Beneath Tom Thibodeau being fired by the Minnesota “Timberwolves.”  Beneath “Sources: Parsons, Grizzlies agree on seperation”. To call the interest in Clemson-Alabama XXII an afterthought is to insult afterthoughts everywhere.

College football is marginalizing itself. In-game attendance for bowl games was shockingly, historically low. TV ratings were down. And now the sport’s showcase is 21st on ESPN on Main Event Eve. Prediction: TV ratings for the national championship game will set a new low. There will be some empty seats at Levi’s Stadium.

The college football playoff has done unforeseen, significant damage to the sport. It is so easy to become pushed to the rear in America’s crowded sports calendar. And so difficult to push front and center again when you have been nudged to the rear. The sport is in some trouble.

Now, I am going to do spell-check on this, read it over for coherence and then, hopefully, hit “Publish.”
