Having saved the democratic world from the fatality of semi-circular legislative chambers, Winston Churchill turned his attention to saving Italy from the Italians. Mussolini had been deposed. Marshal Pietro Badoglio had been appointed by King Emmanuel to form a government. The Allies were maneuvering gingerly about Italian surrender, recognition of some new government in Italy, and Italian entry into the war against Nazi Germany. It was a clusterfuck and poor Harold Macmillan, Minister Resident in the Mediterranean, had one massive headache already in General de Gaulle and the French when the Italian shitstorm landed on his plate as well.
Other political complications occurred.
Prime Minister to Mr. Macmillan (Algiers) 25 Sept 43
Astonishment was caused here at a broadcast from the Bari radio in the name of 'the King of Italia and Albania and Emperor of Ethiopia'. I need scarcely say that any repetition of follies like that will bring our whole policy into discredit here. How would the King like to be sent back to his Empire in Ethiopia to be crowned?
...I presume we are going to see the King's speech before he lets it off, or if there is no time for this that you will anyhow vet it. ...
