I am a Democrat and I am pro-immigrant. I am also very tolerant of illegal immigration. But not to the extent of 11,000 people from other lands, mainly South American I understand, coming through our southern border every day. 11,000 people every day.
They are not fentanyl mules and they are not drug gangs or criminals. They will be absorbed into the main of American life and become contributors--eventually. But this is overwhelming our welcome to them and our ability to transition them.
This is bad policy on the substance--11,000 a day is not trying hard enough. And this is bad politics for Democrats. Mayor Eric Adams of New York City, I'm no fan, has gone to the border and urged vociferously no more. New York City is at and over capacity. Adams is ending NYC as a sanctuary city. DeSantis and Abbott have bussed and jetted migrants illegally entering their states to NYC, Martha's Vineyard and every sanctuary city they could send them to.
I have ignored this as overblown and typical of Republican nativism and that is on me. 11,000 people illegally crossing every day is simply unacceptable. In my view, President Biden, Democrats in both branches of Congress, and Democratic voters need to demonstrate our nous on this issue. It is wrong policy, it is derelict of duty, and it is horrible politics. Democrats need drastic, humane, constitutional, firm and determined action to end this abortion NOW.
