More from Senator Sanders:
In the Middle East, where we provide nearly $4 billion a year in aid to Israel, we can no longer be apologists for the right-wing Netanyahu government and its undemocratic and racist behavior. We must change course and adopt an evenhanded approach, one that upholds and strengthens international law regarding the protection of civilians, as well as existing U.S. law holding that the provision of U.S. military aid must not enable human rights abuses.[I disagree. An "evenhanded approach" would give 3.8B every year in military aid to the Palestinians. I don't favor that. Giving 3,8B in military aid to an already-rich country guarantees that there will be human rights abuses.]
This approach must recognize that Israel has the absolute right to live in peace and security, but so do the Palestinians. I strongly believe that the United States has a major role to play in helping Israelis and Palestinians to build that future.

[I disagree."This approach" is Sanders proposal for the U.S. government. It is too much like making the U.S. a guarantor of Israeli and Palestinian security--which we have been! Israel is 73 years old and wealthy. The U.S. has played --my God!--"a major role" in Israel and Palestine from the beginning. "Helping" two foreign peoples reach "peace and security" is no help if the two peoples don't want peace and security themselves; and it should not take 73 years. The Palestinians do not want peace and security with Israel and Israel under Netanyahu does not want peace and security with the Palestinians. An "evenhanded approach" here means cutting off 3.8B in military aid annually to Israel. That is my approach.]
...We must recognize that Palestinian rights matter. Palestinian lives matter.
[I agree with that.]
