Family chat group text today after we finished:
D-2: "Guys, I changed my tutor, and I am very happy about it! It was a very productive sesh we had today, I am very motivated and happy with it"
D-2: "Just giving updates π₯³"
Me: "i was in the first meeting this morning and i concur. he is MUCH more hands on than was [previous tutor] , and put us on a slightly different "process"--one that he is going to monitor in addition to me!
"i'm no longer the time-keeper, either. lucas told us to emphasize "quality over quantity" (of questions and flashcards answered). there is now no time limit except in understanding. this is not going to prolong the process but speed it up because of fully understanding.
"the biggest change however was ana's on her own. a couple of weeks ago she began to "think like a doctor". she committed to answer the uworld questions BEFORE researching. we had been told to do that by the previous tutor, but ana was not real satisfied with her by that point and we didn't do it.
"research ahead of time gives a false positive reading on your correct score. ana, i think, was using research beforehand as a shield against disappointment and discouragement. since deciding to kick away the crutch, of course, our scores are lower, but ana (and i too) GAINED confidence. on almost every single question since, ana has gotten the second-high answer when she has not gotten it right. as a doctor, you have differential diagnoses that come to mind when you first see a patient. that is the way the uworld questions are. the multiple-choice answers are ALL plausible. you THINK, rule one or more out, think more, rule another or so out and then you're left with two if you don't have the right answer. it is exactly the way that doctors operate."
Me, much later, 9:50 pm:
"5'38" mon.
5'30" tues
4'45" today.
"i'm going to BED! ME, Workaholic Ranck, in bed before 10 pm. never worked so hard in my life."
Me, 10:03 pm:
"lucas has passed first step and second step and is in residency. he told us in the meeting this morning,
"'you have to work EVERY day. i work every day, sat.'s, sun.'s, my birthday, Christmas, new year's, every day. even if you do just two questions and 25 flashcards on sat. or sun., you have to work. when i look at your workdays on anki [the flashcards dashboard] i want to see all green squares [worked] . i don't want to see one day with a black square.'"
Ana, 10:08 pm:
"He was hands on, and he explained why this, why that, and analyzed graphs comparing to how medical students (probably Americans) do it, how they score and why they do it like that, and he seemed to be have data basing his speech, he was convincing
"As I said before when I booked him, he’s a shark!
Ana, replying to my 9:50 post on hours worked:
"And it’s basically no break studying"
Me: "no! we don't break for lunch, only to go to bathroom. i went the entire day with no solid food. just caffeine, nicotine and vit a. better living thru chemicals.π"
