The 1977 Johnstown Flood

This was the day the music died.

For a few Johnstowners this was the third major flood in their lifetimes. For many it was the second. For those, and even for first-timers, this was the last. They simply moved away.

Johnstown forgot and rebuilt quickly after the 1889 Great Flood. After the 1936 flood they rebuilt through FDR and the Army Corps of Engineers. Johnstown had been made “flood proof.” They did not stay and rebuild after this one.

Extremely disturbing news out of (where else?) Florida tonight, very troubling personally to the person of the undersigned, to wit:

Florida man allegedly used scissors to cut off penis of wife's lover

-NBC

Alex Bonilla, 49, was arrested Sunday after his neighbor told a deputy that Bonilla tied him up at gunpoint and cut off his penis with a pair of scissors. Bonilla then allegedly left with the severed penis, according to a police report from the Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office.

Clearly a Trump supporter, no question; he has all the indicia. Hispanic name, Florida, limpy dick, righteously cuckolded by his neglected betrothed, thinks he can get get Democratic mojo by eunuching a real man. Will probably fellate the dismembered victim’s member to see what his wife found found so alluring.
I want this to be a matter of record now.

Pitt plays PSU on September 14. To state the obvious I will be very happy if my Beloveds win and sad if they lose. I will be happiest however that this mini-series is finally done and I never want Pitt to have truck with PSU again, in any way, at any time, ever.

Picking Bones

We are now ready to tackle Dickens. We are now ready to cudgel Dickens. We are now ready to stew Dickens.

Actually there will be none of that here. Actually I plagiarized that from Nabokov's lecture on Dickens substituting cudgel and stew for embrace and bask for Nabokov was awed by Dickens' writing. Dickens' greatness was, to Nabokov, as an "enchanter." Just so. Le mot juste there by Nabokov. Dickens was a "good" storyteller, a "good" moralist but a "superb" enchanter, Nabokov says. His descriptive writing, of scenes, of characters, sends a "shiver," Nabokov's word also, up and down the spine. Indeed, one could pick the fictional Lady Dedlock out of a lineup, so complete is Dickens' description of her. I could see, feel, hear, and smell the carriage ride up Shooter's Hill in A Tale of Two Cities. I have never experienced the transport of senses that Dickens provides with any other writer. He was "tipped at the head with a divine flame." He is, to moi, the finest writer of prose in the English language, the most supple of all languages.

So what bone is there to pick with Dickens? Only these, in context quite beside the point of his transcendence.

His strength in character drawing was also his weakness for he therefore drew so many characters into his romances that the reader (and one gets the impression, Dickens himself) loses track of them. I have previously truly cudgeled Dickens for the absurd Dora Spenlow character in David Copperfield. Dickens seems to have cudgeled himself for Dora also for he killed her off before long.

Dickens wrote his novels in installment. Did you know that? That is why his chapters so frequently end on a "Be here next time!" Batman note. That is also why Dickens' books are frequently so long. He did not have the whole book in his head when he began writing. He developed it between installments. It makes for a disjointed whole. The medium of magazine installment meant that Dickens could not self-edit. Once he wrote in Dora Spenlow, if he came to think that a mistake, he could not excise her out. She had already been published! The medium also effected Dickens' message. I disagree with Nabokov that Dickens is a "good" storyteller. The installment format caused him to add layer upon layer upon layer to the story so as to make it not one story but several separate stories, tangentially connected, and to add in absurdities: "spontaneous combustion."

His strength as descriptive writer was at the expense of a wordy unwieldiness. Hemingway was a great descriptive writer although not Dickens' equal and was great with a spare writing style. Eh, English vs American, different time periods...But. The King James Bible was also written by Englishmen. Hemingway got his spare style from the KJV! I would not subtract one word of Dickens' scene or character description but I would take a blunt edged axe to his stories. He could have done more with less. Bleak House could have been two or three or four novels rather than the bloated 800 page thing it was. It would have been improved by the chopping and the reader would have had more of Dickens' books to read.

oh my god i am so fucking bored

Picking Bones

Continuing our popular series we now take up cudgel against two of our favorite authors, Lord Tweedsmuir and Charles Dickens. First Tweedsmuir.

Each time I pick up Pilgrim's Way, which I do more frequently than any other book on my shelves, I go to my favorite passages first, one of which is an amusing anecdote concerning Lord Haldane, later Secretary of War, Lord High Chancellor, and Leader of the House of Lords, and in 1903 lawyer for the Free Church of Scotland in the case of "General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland against Overtoun and Others." M'Lud, introduce yourself please.

Thankk you! Lordy, it does not appear that Lord Haldane would be the cause of amusement; however appearances can sometimes be deceiving and in fact Lord Haldane was cause of amusement in his advocacy on behalf of the Free Church of Scotland in 1903 but Lord Tweedsmuir got it all wrong. Tweedsmuir, tell it your way and then I shall cudgel.

Haldane led for that Church, and his argument fell into two parts--one historical and the other philosophical. The historical argument was simply that a Scottish Church...must be assumed to have the right to change its tenets within certain broad limits and to retain its endowments, unless the instruments creating such endowments contained specific words to the contrary. To that argument I believe there was no answer, and had it been really pressed, the court could not have resisted it. But Haldane was not an historian, and he concentrated on the philosophical argument based on the familiar Hegelian formulas--that identify exists through change and difference, that a thing is itself only because it is also in some sense its opposite, and so forth. It was a remarkable piece of dialectic, but it was an impossible argument to present to a court of justice, and it had the most disastrous effect upon various members of the House of Lords. One, I remember, became fatally confused between the philosophic term 'antinomy' and the metal 'antimony.'

Oh mirthiful heaven. The undersigned became so mirthsome upon a tenth or eleventh or twelfth reading of that passage a couple of years ago that he looked up the case. Had some degree of difficulty finding it but eventually did Free Church of Scotland Case; read more of that case than any normal person in the 21st century should; searched the damn text for antinomy and antimony and was shocked to discover that no one on the House of Lords became fatally confused between the two terms that day on accounta the metallic antimony was never used! Frowny face there. BIG frowny face. The undersigned became a wee bit irritated with Tweedsmuir. There is such mirth to be gained from reading the exchanges among the various Lords and Haldane, e.g.--

Mr. Haldane.--...your Lordship is assuming, if I may respectfully say so, an anthropomorphic conception of the Supreme Being. It is very difficult to discuss these things, but I must say your Lordship is really assuming that the Supreme Being stands to a particular man in the relation of another man--a cause eternal to Him in space and time acting on space and time and separate from Him as one thing is separate from another. The whole point of the speculative teaching has been that that is not so; the whole point of the Church has been that that is a totally inadequate conception, and that, at any rate without resorting to any explanation, they have to hold the two things as in harmony and reconcilable.

Lord James of Hereford.--Mr. Haldane, till you told me so I had not the slightest idea that I was conceiving that.

Mr. Haldane.--I am afraid, my Lord, theologians would deal severely with your Lordship's statement.

Lord James of Hereford.--I am much obliged to you.

--that it was completely unnecessary of Tweedsmuir to add to it with slapstick confusion. However, and this in some fairness to Tweedsmuir, Pilgrim's Way is sub-titled "An Essay in Recollection." Perhaps Tweedsmuir recollected incorrectly? And the book was published posthumously. So, he did not have the opportunity to check his recollection for correction? Perhaps. But it was published. Did Houghton Mifflin not check it for accuracy? Is not that the purpose of a Houghton Mifflin? Did Tweedsmuir's estate not notify the publisher that there was this error so that perhaps a footnote could be inserted?

No, it was not faulty memory. The more the undersigned thought about it the more convinced he became that this was deliberate poetic license by Tweedsmuir. You mean to tell me the House of Lords, in the midst of legal argument, truly thought Haldane was referencing a metal? The context completely belies such an absurd notion. Haldane used antinomy several times; the Lord Chancellor and Lord Alverstone questioned him specifically about it. Haldane did not have to disabuse them of understanding the metal.

Is this nit picking? No, I hold decidedly not. Not to the undersigned anyway, who has relied upon this book so many times and has benefited in his soul and his funny bone so many times that this disagreeable discovery made him then consider if other of Tweedsmuir's soul-lifting, tickling recollections were incorrectly recollected or, and this the rub, invented. The fact is Tweedsmuir knew better. This was a case of singular importance to him, a proud Presbyterian Scot. Everything else Tweedsmuir wrote in that passage is accurate. "I remember" the fatal confusion between antinomy and antimony? No sir. No and hell no. You made it up.

Be that as it may, perhaps the undersigned has so jeopardized the popularity of this series with this overlong post that he should treat of Dickens another time? Yes.

The more uncomfortable issue has been the outsized number of Jewish men involved in #MeToo, beginning with Weinstein, and addressing that fact without giving aid and comfort to anti-Semites.

In addition to Weinstein and [Leon] Wieseltier, the list of Jewish men implicated in #MeToo over the past 12 months includes former Democratic senator Al Franken; ousted CBS chief Les Moonves; actors Dustin Hoffman, Jeffrey Tambor and Jeremy Piven; directors Woody Allen, James Toback and Brett Ratner; playwright Israel Horowitz; journalists Mark Halperin and Michael Oreskes; conductor James Levine; and radio show hosts Leonard Lopate and Jonathan Schwartz [and Jeffrey Epstein].
...
But speaking out about this also came at a price. Mark Oppenheimer made the first attempt, writing in Tablet last October about what he called the “specifically Jewy perviness of Harvey Weinstein” – in an article that also pointed out that “nearly every one” of his victims were non-Jewish women, “all the better to feed Weinstein’s revenge-tinged fantasy of having risen above his outer-borough, bridge-and-tunnel Semitic origins.”

Following an outcry, Oppenheimer, Tablet’s editor-at-large, published an apology the following day, calling his initial post “hasty and ill-considered.”
...
Feminist scholar Elana Sztokman...”I’m not suggesting that all Jewish men are potential abusers. ... That said, I definitely think that there is room for us, as a community, to ask the question, ‘How are we educating men to be men?’ Because, as much as I hate to give fodder to anti-Semites, I do actually think that there may be something here about Jewish masculinities.”

Grand Old Predators

Or, the "Caligula administration," as Michelle Goldberg of the New York Times puts it. Alex Acosta Secretary of Labor and the former United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida who cut the unconscionable plea deal with child predator Jeffrey Epstein has resigned.

Republicans are rapists.
Now the informed spec is that OKC will immediately flip Chris Paul to a willing MIA. Don’t know what to think of that yet.

Westbrook’s first choice destination was Houston, not MIA. “Thunder” prioritized draft picks in both trades with LAC and Cows. Cognoscenti were wrong on both. (Doubly so. In Cognos’ reconsideration OKC wanted to weaken MIA not strengthen with Westbrook bc they own to “Heat” draft picks.) General manager Sam Presti is the polar oposite of Pat Riley. Okies now have 15 first round draft picks in next 7 years and draft position swap rights with 4 of those picks. Little obsessive there? Well, Presti is the only general manager in the whole history of the earth to have drafted 3 future league MVP’s: James Harden, Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook. FUCK.

Besides the report of reliable Greg Cote that Miami owner Micky Arison is not “as big a fan” of Russell Westbrook as Pat Riley is there has been absolutely nothing new today on the Westbrook front. I thought this might get done last night. I could hear in my mind’s ear the cell phone towers pinging between here and Oklahoma City; I could see in my mind’s eye the perspiration on the brow of Miami capaholic Andy Elisburg as he tweaked the numbers one more time and then, and then shouted “I’ve got it!” Where there is will there are ways and there was three-part will yesterday and seemingly myriad ways. Since then: silence.

I am told Heat owner Micky Arison may not be as big a fan of Westbrook as Riley is, but I’d be shocked if that ended up a deal-breaker. Not if Riley were adamant and if coach Erik Spoelstra (and Butler, as a courtesy) gave a thumbs up.

Not a dang thing happening, at least not publicly. Really thought it was going to get done last night. Really thought wrong.

Westbrook to Miami?

I am convinced that this is going to happen. In the afternoon reports both Adrian Wojnarowski and former teammate Kendrick Perkins say Miami makes more sense for Westbrook and for OKC than does Detroit (Detroit?) or Houston. Cows are a very aggressive organization but they are in salary cap hell with James Harden and Chris Paul. They are therefore reluctant to take on an added $171,000,000. Which you can understand.

Woj said that OKC may not be looking for too much in return (Which just blows my fucking mind. Could this get any fucking better?) OKC is more interested in getting rid of the salary. They don't need anymore draft picks because they got five or seven from LAC for Paul George. Which is fucking great because Miami ain't got no fucking draft picks. Riles traded 'em all. So since NBA trades have to match salaries what OKC is looking for are trades of expiring contracts!

Which is fucking great because the "Heat" has got TONS of those HOOO DOGGIE! So the "Thunder" would be looking to take just the players needed to match Russ' K and it'd all be OK in OKC. Are you fucking kidding me. I mean, now my fucking dick is going to explode.

The Heat have spoken to Oklahoma City about trading for Russell Westbrook.

I asked a league source — “Can Miami pull something like that off?”

The reply?

“Riley is a magician...don’t ever doubt him. Don’t ask me that again.”

Sheesh, sorry. 😂

Chris of the exploding penis makes a good point. Nate Scott or Nick Scott, whatever, Scott of USAToday made the same point Saturday: Jimmy and Russ are two...explosive personalities. That suits the Miami “Heat” perfectly. And Pat Riley. The “Heat,” even when they suck, are the most hated team to play in the NBA. They are intense, physical, strong, and a little psychotic. Um...

The first thing Pat Riley did in Miami was trade for Alonzo Mourning. Zo man. Fuck. Zo could explode hoo doggie.  Riley’s “Knicks” teams? John Starks, Anthony Mason. No autopsy, no foul.

The “Heat” have Erik Spoelstra. He coached the Big Three with Birdman. He knows how to handle superstars, personalities, exploding penises.

The Jimmy Butler trade made Miami a playoff team again. Adding Russell Westbrook would give Miami a, er, fighting chance against the elite of the Eastern Conference. Bet365 currently has Milwaukee 11/8, Philly 5/2, Boston 6/1, Brooklyn 15/2, Toronto 11/1, Indiana 16/1 and then Miami at 22/1 to win the East. Adding Westbrook would (I bet. Do you get it?) move the "Heat" ahead of Brooklyn (No KD yet) and Beans into third. So yeah, Russ and Jimmy would do just fine in Miami.

Houston would be fun, as it would pair Westbrook with his old teammate in James Harden, but a Miami trade feels more likely. The Heat have some promising young players that should interest the Thunder.

I still can hardly believe this.
