Mary Trump has a message for the president: 'Resign'
The president's niece claimed in an ABC News interview that her uncle is "utterly incapable of leading this country, and it's dangerous to allow him to do so."

Well, she has a point there. That would be best for the country between now and January 20. Second best for these six months would be declining to run. I have resisted both, perhaps dangerously. Until James Carville mentioned the latter I had never given serious thought to either. Principally because I think either is a non-starter, he's not going to do it. But, I also have developed an abiding conviction that Trump and Trumpism must be soundly defeated at the ballot box. That is also the goal of my brothers and sisters at the Lincoln Project. A sound defeat would be in the best long-term interests of the country. Conviction and removal in the Senate was by far the best option. It would have been plastic surgery that removed this disfiguring scar on America's face. It would have said to the world, "He was illegitimate. We were attacked and this hideosity was installed. That wasn't us! That was Russia!" That didn't happen. I don't see how even a sound defeat removes that scar. Why would our friends and allies trust us again? If he was legitimate and the election that installed him was legitimate and another legitimate election removed him you're just putting makeup on the scar. "So, we're supposed to trust you again now that you've elected Biden? Who is to say in 2024 Trump or a Trump clone doesn't run again and win again?" Democratic theory itself itself is severely injured when a democracy legitimately makes the choice this one did in 2016. A democracy elevated Adolph Hitler to the chancellorship of Germany! Thanks but no thanks democracy! That is an entirely legitimate view, and it is mine. Is that being shortsighted in being longsighted, though? If the long game will not, likely, deliver the desideratum, then why play it when the short is guaranteed? That is a legitimate view, as well. In the event we will not have to resolve our sightedness dilemma. We could not prevent Trump from resigning nor declining to run again, even if he so chose, which I think very unlikely. We must then CRUSH him and his cult.
