Ja Morant fined $75,000 by NBA after multiple gun gestures vs Miami Heat

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has been fined $75,000 by the NBA for multiple gun gesture motions during a game against the Miami Heat on Thursday, the league announced on Friday.

Morant was warned by the NBA after he received a technical foul for making the same gesture during Tuesday’s game against the Golden State Warriors. After the league’s warning, Morant did the celebration three times against the Heat after making 3-pointers.

One of the notable things about the ongoing rout in financial markets is the fact that the dollar is also tumbling. That isn’t how it typically works. In bouts of volatility, the dollar tends to do well, serving as a haven for investors. The move also undercuts one of the main arguments that Trump’s economic advisors have long promoted as to why tariffs would not be inflationary. They argued that tariffs would raise the value of the dollar, helping to offset the impact of rising prices. Some strategists say the drop — even after a slight rebound today — reflects intensifying fears of a U.S. recession because of tariffs. Others say it could reflect something even more pernicious: Investors are starting to question U.S. economic exceptionalism.

Dow plunges 2,000 as sell-off for markets slams into a scarier gear following Trump’s tariffs

NEW YORK (AP) — The sell-off for financial markets worldwide is slamming into a higher, scarier gear on Friday.

The S&P 500 tumbled 5.7% as Wall Street’s worst crisis since the COVID crash deepened after China matched President Donald Trump’s big raise in tariffs announced earlier this week. The move increases the stakes in a trade war that could end with a recession that hurts everyone.

For all USMLE students young (or old):

We Rise With Our Dreams (John Jarvis and Joe Henry)

Man can’t recall
When he first learned to fall
Or the time
When he first learned to climb.
But the dream is the thing
Both his anchor and wing
It's his soul
And the flame in his eye.

Oh the wisdom is reaching
Far beyond what you see
And the triumph is seeking
All the best you can be.
So delight in the journey
Or the struggle it seems
For the spirit is learning
That we rise with our dreams.

Man is the sum
Of the living he’s done
And the choices
He's made in his time.
To the left or the right
Through the dark or the light
Given earth
How he yearns for the sky.
Oh the wisdom is reaching
Far beyond what you see
And the triumph is seeking
All the best you can be.
So delight in the journey
Or the struggle it seems
For the spirit is learning
That we rise with our dreams.

Replay confirmed Morant's shot beat the clock.

👏👏

That was a tough, tough game after Beans last night. No shame in losing on the second of a back-to-back as time expired to a good team. "Heat" fall to 35-42, guaranteeing first season with losing record since...2018/19?

My 401k is now a 201k.

Canada to retaliate against Trump with tariffs on US autos

Prime Minister Mark Carney says countermeasures designed for “maximum impact” will focus on vehicles that don’t comply with the USMCA.

Carney said Canada will respond to President Donald Trump’s tariffs with 25 percent counter measures on vehicles imported from the United States that do not comply with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, as well as on the non-Canadian content of USMCA-compliant vehicles.
...
...Carney said that Canada hopes to forge a new global alliance across Europe and with Mexico. “Canada is ready to take a leadership role in building a coalition of like-minded countries who share our values,” he added.

...

Carney said Trump’s global reciprocal tariffs have ended 80 years of American global economic leadership that started after World War II.

“This is a tragedy. ...

He emphasized that Canada remains a U.S. ally — “our ally in security and defense partnerships,” he added.

“Part of what our relationship has been based on, though, has been a degree of integration between our economies, our trade becoming closer and closer together. That is over.”

NEW YORK (AP) Wall Street shuddered, and a level of shock unseen since COVID’s outbreak tore through financial markets worldwide Thursday on worries about the damage President Donald Trump’s newest set of tariffs could do to economies across continents, including his own.

U.S. markets slid Thursday in their steepest declines since 2020, as investors grappled with the threat that President Trump’s new tariff plan will trigger global retaliation and hurt the economy.

Major stock indexes dropped as much as 6%. Stocks lost roughly $3.1 trillion in market value Thursday, their largest one-day decline since March 2020.

The Dow industrials dropped 1679 points, or 4%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq, which powered the market higher for years, was down 6%, pulled lower by big declines in Nvidia, Apple and Amazon.com. The S&P 500, which fell 4.8%, and the other benchmarks suffered their sharpest declines since the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The dollar meanwhile tumbled, with the WSJ Dollar Index suffering its sharpest decline since 2023. The 1.3% fall brought the greenback to its lowest level since October, a sign of unease over the growth outlook and fears that the flow of funds into the country will be sharply curtailed. Inflation expectations rose.

*Update. This post was sent to D-2 personally shortly after publication. She thanked me movingly. Unbeknownst to me she forwarded it to several others in her USMLE study chat group. On Friday (today as I type this update), Ana told me that the post was moving to her friends also, one of whom wept.

By normal measure D-2 and I failed spectacularly today. By normal measure Michael Jordan, making only 49.7% of all of his shots, was a failure as a shotmaker. But USMLE and the NBA are not normal. MJ was the greatest basketball player who ever lived (and he would have flunked USMLE at his 49.7% shot rate). Ana and I did not fail today, and Michael Jordan was not a failure. Each of us learned from our misses, Ana and I literally from the questions we got wrong.

USMLE is the hardest exam in the country. The NBA is the hardest basketall league in the world. Wanna be a U.S. doctor? Wanna be a NBA baller? Wanna be like Mike? Then internalize that in those worlds normal is not normal, failure is not failure and bad is not bad-- if you keep shooting or studying and learning.

The USMLE is not for normal people; the NBA is not for normal people. Anything can throw your day off at this elite level: too much good, too much bad, too much sleep, too little sleep, too many distractions, too little "background noise". There is no guarantee what kind of day you're going to have. You have a fight with your spouse, problems with your kids, you have to shut those things out as much as possible to succeed at work...Or those "other" things can stimulate you to be better in the one aspect of your life that you're succeeding at. Your marital life is sublime and your kid just hit a home run in Little League, a happy personal life makes a productive work life...Or your personal life is so good you get cocky and screw up at work.

What you cannot do, never, ever, ever, is stop taking (or giving) your shots.

Ja Morant, Memphibians, pointing a hand rifle at the peaceniks bench Tuesday night. Morant has been suspended twice for a total of 33 games by the NBA for brandishing a real gun in public.

The reactions of Draymond Green and Steph Curry:

Draymond motioning to the nearest official, Steph looking back at Morant like, "What is the MATTER with you?"

Steph, pained, gesturing to the official, "Did you see that? You gotta do something, man."

Steph studying Morant, the most telling look.

Joe Mazz "opted to pull the plug."

After the Celtics scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to pull within four points, the Heat put the game away with a 20-9 spurt to increase its lead to 15 with 5:04 to play and force a Celtics timeout.

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla then opted to pull the plug, returning from that timeout by subbing out Boston’s best players and emptying the bench.

Starless Wheels Don't Turn*

It occurs to me that the "Wheel" offense is the exact counterpart to the zone defense:

*Updated 9:23 pm

9:58

a premium on space and movement, not bodies; moving in sync in the same direction as five interconnected pieces, similar to the lever-operated soccer games in bars. Or like tiki-taka in real soccer; developed and installed to mask individual talent deficiencies, consequently minimizing individual excellence.

Because of all of the above, and in particular that last, instantiated in star Ja Morant, the "wheel" as played at St. Josephs, Maine and played in Memphis with the instruction of a former St. Joe's player and acolyte, apparently is out down South. As is the acolyte, Noah LaRoche, and the head coach, Taylor Jenkins, who it appears was a forced convert to the wheel.

This is the result of another couple of hours spent reading and thinking about the wheel.

A few other notes from reading and cogitating:

I confess that I didn't know anything about Memphis' offense until Jenkins' firing. There is plenty of ink on Memphis' early season success with the shiny new wheel, but the ink had not penetrated to my subterranean level. And that early season success did not transfer to the second half. Which wont of success, and Morant's complaints about the wheel, directly led to the axing of Jenkins, LaRoche, and another assistant, Patrick St. Andrews. The "Grizzlies" are 3L (0-2 under new head man Tuomas Iisalo, and 3-7. They were 26-15 at the half-way mark. They are 18-16 since.

The reasons for Memphis' second half dip in results are pretty straightforward: They played one of the easiest schedules in the first half, a substantially more difficult one in the second half; defenses got book on the new offense and adjusted; and one other, mentioned by at least one Memphis player, physical defenses. Again, the tiki-taka analogy. I have always believed that you should mass pressure on tiki-taka, play man-to-man, rush the man with the ball into passing before he's ready and before the octagon gets set, disrupt the passing lanes. Tiki-taka, like the wheel, is a movement and spacing offense. So, for example, what the "Knicks" did was put a body on every "Grizzlie", bump them, keep them from getting where they want to go, in this way prevent the elegant player and ball movement of the wheel.

One thing is still fuzzy for me. Is Tuomas Iisalo a wheel coach or a pick-and-roll coach? On the one hand Iisalo was hired with LaRoche and other wheelies; he "played a pivotal role in implementing" the wheel in Memphis, was one of two (with LaRoche) "architects"; he coached in Europe where the wheel spins more freely (and where the game is less physical); Ja Morant "hates" Iisalo's offense. However, other reports style Iisalo as "partial to the pick-and-roll who drills his teams in those concepts like a sergeant." Unless Iisalo is a PnR guy, why would Memphis' GM fire LaRoche, fire Jenkins, and promote Iisalo if he was a wheelie?

Understanding it more now, I am not surprised, nor chagrined, that the wheel evidently has gone flat in Memphis. I don't like the zone defense in the NBA, one reason for which is the "democratization" of the game, i.e. the leveling of individual talent. The wheel is a zone offense that tethers more stars to earth. I am not surprised that as simple an NBA tactic as playing bully ball would cause the wheels to fall off. The surprise is that so fragile a system was attempted at all at this level where the adage is "no autopsy, no foul."

As the Wheel Turns (or doesn't) in Memphis.

...the Grizzlies had become something of a science experiment this season, offering glimpses at how several radical offensive concepts from Europe, and spacing principles found in hockey and soccer, would work in the NBA...

Whatever the merits of the Wheel offence in the Association turn out to be, this is the cross-fertilization that all sports need. North American professional hockey was revolutionized when NHL all-stars competed against and almost lost the Summit Series against the Soviets in 1972. Mike Gottfried experimented with Kentucky basketball's wholesale substitution platoon system in Pitt football in the 1980's. "Celtics" head coach Joe Mazzulla went to Manchester to talk to City's Pep Guardiola about tiki-taka. I give Memphis the highest marks for going to St. Joseph's College, Maine, and to Europe for the Wheel. Sports would benefit from a formal forum where ideas are proposed, exchanged, critiqued and peer-reviewed.

"What we missed this season was heart, soul; the desire... For a manager the most important thing is to recover this passion. After Bournemouth [in November], ...as a team we didn’t have heart. That’s the most important thing we have to recover at the end of the season and in the future.”

Guardiola was asked why the heart had been missing during what has been the toughest season of his nine at City. “I will write it in my memoirs,” he said. “It was many things. Not just one. And put Pep first on the list. I should have taken decisions I didn’t take in the right moment.

Interesting to me that he,

...relied on what he called his “legendary” players – Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gündogan – in his side’s win...

at Bournemouth in the FA Cup Sunday, because the roster is old, it needed an injection of new youth which Pep also has admitted. He should have added players last summer, he has said. But Sunday, for one match, one last time, he leaned on his "legends" to recapture the "soul" of Manchester City.

Erling Out 5-7 Weeks (ankle)

The "Heat" have won five straight. Yeah, but. All but Golden State had awful records, and Peaceniks were without Steph Curry. Well, we lost to awful teams during our 10L, namely Queens and Male Cows. These 5L have not been lucky squeakers, either. All by d.d, an average of 20.4 pts.

I put nothing past New Miami. Of course, we will be underdogs at Worldchampbeans tomorrow night. Of course, we will probably lose. Just saying, I don't put a dub past us. Then we have the tilted Memphibians, coached by a Fin, in the Bus, the Male Deer, coached by a Doctor, also in Bang Bus, the diseased Seven Foot Sixers, under care of a Nurse, same place. We conclude the season in Wind, at Disgruntled Pelicans, and home to Lizards. I say we will go 6-1, finish 40-42, .488. Not good, first time we will have had a losing record since 2018/19. But. That win percentage decimal would be good enough for seventh place right now, where we have finished before. And an 11-1 finishing kick? Pretty damn impressive considering we had 10L in March!

It's April Fool's Day...APRIL FOOL!
