China tries to use Trump turmoil to unite leaders against U.S.-led order

Chief WaPo

This was inevitable. And a unified China-India-Russia alliance is big enough to send the U.S. economy crashing. I hope it succeeds. The U.S. is an embarrassment, a principal to war crimes, and a tariff bully. American consumers made their political choice with eyes wide open. They now need to feel the maximum pain as a consequence.

Liverpool Dynasty

Folks, these are two of the best young players in Merry Old. Liverpool are the defending Premier League champions. They beat Arsenal today. They are in the driver's seat for a repeat. Prohibitively so. Now they get Isak and Guehi? You're talking three-peat and more. John Henry (Fenway Sports Group) has turned a sputtering org into a showroom model. They are the best in the business and this team is beginning to lap the rest of the league.

🚨 Liverpool have this evening resumed talks for Alexander Isak after #NUFC's owners indicated they are willing to sanction a sale. Final decision made directly by Yasir Al-Rumayyan.
...
Marc Guehi talks also continue. Liverpool won't sanction Joe Gomez's potential switch to Milan unless the Crystal Palace captain arrives. Guehi has now told Crystal Palace he wants to join Liverpool.

FT Liverpool 1 Arsenal 0

Livers are the class organization in the EPL, maybe in all world soccer. All praise to them. What Mary Waltz wrote in to The Guardian however is equally true:

"Early days, miles to go etc etc,” writes Mary Waltz. “But this is a big loss for Arteta. Arsenal management gave him everything he could want and he comes up short. Again.”

I am a fan of one team, Manchester City. But one of my best friends is a huge gooner and my face dropped when I saw that Liverpool had scored in the 83'.

My City

Last season it was a game against Brighton on November 9 that was at the start of City's inexplicable slide. And it was a game against Brighton on March 25 that Pep and Rodri both identified as being the (very late) point where City got its mojo back.

Like then, this loss to Brighton comes as the second straight. Rodri was asked his thoughts on the game:

“Disappointing. We are Man City and we come here to win. But this is our reality. We are not in the level from a long, long time. The only way to come back is to look at ourselves. That is the reality. I think we started well but the second half we dropped a little bit and here at home they pressure and two big mistakes from us and 2-1..."

What does he mean by not being at the level: “We are missing the level. Call it how you want. It is a matter of the team, changes, of course new players have to adapt, when you change the team that much it is difficult. This is our reality. It is not for excuses. We have to look to ourselves and see that this is not the way to achieve things. We got to the international break, clear the mind and come back stronger.”

"...the reality is we have to rise the level if we want to compete for this.”

City LOST! 😂

Oh my goodness. You have to laugh. Or at least I do. An 89' goal dropped us into TWELFTH place. We have one dub and two L's on the new season. I really think Pep has lost the team. Last year's weirdness is followed by this year's start.

City

Manchester City are 1-1 with Brighton and Hove White People on the coast. Erling gave us the lead in the 34' but ex-Cityzen James Milner canceled in the 67' on a PK. We're now in the 86'. Looks like a draw. City have not regained form after last season.

I don't envy the AP voters their task this week

Number One Texas lost as a small underdog at number 3 Ohio. Number two Paterno-Sandusky finished five votes, out of 1552 cast behind Texas in the final pre-season poll. They destroyed cupcake Nevada in Towel Snappy Valley. Were I a vote, honor would dictate that I vote the Pedo-Lions number one. But I don't have a vote.

LSU will zoom up the rankings. Alabama will fall to the bottom 10 of the top 25. Florida State will go from unranked to leap-frog the "Tide." It was a tale of two games for the SEC and ACC, each conference winning a big contest, each losing one.

FT Clemson (4) 10 LSU (9) 17

A tremendous win for an excellent head coach and asshole, Brian Kelly. I did not think he would do it. He staked everything on this game, preaching "1-0" all spring and summer, pettily called Clemson "Junior Death Valley." You can be an asshole down on the bayou if you win. Tonight, Kelly walked his talk. I was rooting against him every snap. He gets the last laugh. Sincere congratulations, Coach Kelly.

And more so, congratulations to LSU's players.

LSU coach Brian Kelly shows frustration with his receivers early in Clemson game

LSU football coach Brian Kelly was less than pleased with mistakes made by a pair of his receivers in the first quarter of Saturday night's game against Clemson.

First, Barion Brown was the culprit on an illegal formation call that wiped out a 16-yard run by Caden Durham.

Following the penalty, Kelly and Barion were seen in an intense conversation on the sideline.

...

As LSU headed to the sideline, Kelly was seen expressing his displeasure with co-offensive coordinator/receivers coach Cortez Hankton. Once the players made their way to the sideline, Kelly began to shout at wide receiver Chris Hilton.

LSU trailed 3-0 late in the first quarter, and it's clear that Kelly knows his team has to clean up the mistakes to avoid a fourth consecutive season-opening loss under his watch.

FT FSU 31 Bama (8) 17

You can lose by 14 when a 13.5 favorite some places, but Alabama is not one of them.

The "Tide" defense was not top-ten quality in this game. FSU ran out the clock on them. They had a 4th and 1 at the Bama 31 with two minutes left. I was wondering what FSU might do. That's a 48-yard field goal from there. On the other hand, if they went for it and Bama stuffed them, stranger things have happened than two TDs in two minutes. Kalen DeBoer called timeout. And Florida State ran it right up the gut for two yards and the first down.

Worse optics: 31-17, 7:17

Florida State marched right down the field and restored its 14-point lead.

IF the score holds up. Bama has scored. FSU 24-17, 8:18 4Q

That is a better optic.

The Tide is Going Out

Florida State is rolling it back 24-10 after three quarters. If this holds up, Alabama's season will not recover from it. And if the season is another disappointment, Kalen DeBoer will be out too.

As I’m writing this, “FLEECED” is trending on X, which is about all the analysis you need to determine who won this trade. Maybe it’s simply that Jerry didn’t want to get shown up in his own town. Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison looked to be running away with the Worst Trade by a Dallas Sports Team Award after sending Luka Doncic to the Lakers in early February. Now, we have ourselves a race.

D-

In one of the most surprising transactions in...[league] history...which sent shockwaves...

...is not only a superstar; he's a generational player.

You're thinking Luka Doncic, arncha? Well...close. A Dallas franchise. But this time, instead of the "Mavericks" and Nico Harrison, it's the "Cowboys" and Jerry Jones. Micah Parsons was traded today to Green Bay. Like the 'Ricks, the 'Boys got a multi-year All-Pro, Kenny Clark, in return, along with something the basketball team didn't get, draft capital, two first round picks. But this trade, like the Donic-Davis trade, is being written of in the same terms by the cognos:

Micah Parsons trade grades: Packers get this generation's Reggie White; Cowboys' franchise set back for years

In one of the most surprising transactions in NFL history, the Dallas Cowboys traded Micah Parsons. Dallas sent Parsons to the Green Bay Packers for two first-round picks and nose tackle Kenny Clark, which sent shockwaves throughout the NFL. ...
...

Packers: A+

There really isn't any other grade to give the Packers here. Green Bay landed a generational pass rusher who isn't even close to entering his prime, all for two first-round picks and star nose tackle Kenny Clark. Sure, Dallas got a haul, but what Green Bay got in return is more significant.
...
Based on how the Packers fared the last few seasons, those late first-round picks would be in the 20s. Green Bay can afford to part ways with those picks for a generational player like Parsons, who the Packers needed badly on their defensive line.

I would point out that in a ratio of roster size and number of teams, you can't compare first round picks apples to apples. In the NFL there are 53 players, in the NBA, 15; in the NFL, 32 teams; NBA, 30. As a ratio of roster size, an NFL team's first round lasts 1.66 rounds, to the 53rd pick, well into the second round, in the draft. An NBA team's same ratio is .5, pick 15. The NBA's ratio, .5 to 15, is the equivalent of the 26.5 the pick in the NFL draft. The NBA lottery for the top pick in the draft involves the worst 14 teams. In the NFL you could practically throw darts at the consensus best 26-27 pick in each draft and hit on a player who becomes a real, real contributor right away. The "Cowboys" got a top-32 pick, likely 26th or 27th, in two draft years.

Cowboys: D-

Parsons is...one of the five best players in football.
...
Sure, two first-round picks and Kenny Clark is a nice return, but not enough for a generational player like Parsons. These aren't even going to be high first-round picks either. [See above]

What Jones did to the Cowboys franchise is malpractice. The NFC East is glad he still owns the Cowboys.

Just like what Nico Harrison did.
