The government had the people believing that "Mao Zedong Thought" had come up with revolutionary (pun intended) agricultural techniques that would produce astonishing yields and allow China to take a "Great Leap" over the U.S. in agricultural output. Oh lord. Look, those of us who are interested in China have to acknowledge something: There was (perhaps still is, I don't know) a level of gullibility on the part of the Chinese people that is as unfathomable as the message of these posters. How could any sensible person believe any of this?
