Red Legacy in China

The killings of people and the truth are the "Red Legacy in China."  But look at the lies that the Chinese government successfully sold to the people.  These are propaganda posters from the Great Leap Forward:

What is that, Big Boy or Little Boy or whatever the name was of the atomic bomb the U.S. dropped on Hiroshima?  No.  It's a melon.  A  m-e-l-o-n.

The government had the people believing that "Mao Zedong Thought" had come up with revolutionary (pun intended) agricultural techniques that would produce astonishing yields and allow China to take a "Great Leap" over the U.S. in agricultural output. Below, enormous red-ribboned shocks of wheat Leap out of the fields.

A potato. A very big potato.

Oh lord. Look, those of us who are interested in China have to acknowledge something: There was (perhaps still is, I don't know) a level of gullibility on the part of the Chinese people that is as unfathomable as the message of these posters. How could any sensible person believe any of this?
