#18 Colorado beat state rival Colorado State last night in double overtime 43-35. But I type not for the score but for a Higher purpose.

Colorado State's players, two different players, intentionally, maliciously, and near-criminally hit Colorado's two best players to knock them out of the game. Travis Hunter, CU's Heisman hopeful two-way player was sent to the hospital, where he remains not incidentally, after a dirty, vicious hit after a pass play was over in the first half. The Colorado State player, who led with his shoulder, making no attempt to tackle, was penalized for targeting and ejected. According to my Big Brother the play cast a pall over the Colorado sideline, including head coach Deion Sanders, who were subdued and preoccupied with concern for the rest of the game.

Then in overtime CU quarterback Shadeur Sanders, the coach's son, was hit by a CSU end rusher, who led with the crown of his helmet, and bear-hugged Shadeur so that he couldn't move to protect himself and drove him into the turf. That Colorado State player was penalized for targeting and ejected too.

So two hits, both with intent to injure, both on CU's best players: this came from the top, CSU head coach Jay Norvell, it is clear to me. Norvell had said pre-gameday that Deion Sanders' habit of addressing the media post-game wearing sunglasses was bad, that he, Norvell, would never do it. Norvell made the game personal, it's already a rivalry game now, and Norvell made it personal between the two coaches and from them personal between their players, and as I said, it is perfectly clear to me that CSU's players understood the dog whistle from their coach and went out to personally injure and take out of the game CU's two best players.

I have reviewed the tapes of the two hits and listened to a physician's explanation of what injuries Travis Hunter could have suffered and why, and if I was the Colorado president I would cancel this series with Colorado State. These are late teenagers or at most early 20-something young men, they are students at the university and I would not have my student athletes subjected to this vicious, dirty play again.
