One-third of the way through the regular season, the Panthers have surpassed their win total from a year ago, secured an undefeated record in nonconference play for the first time in program history and are off to their best start in 24 years.

“That's the way we scripted that win today. Talked to our guys just about the attitude we take and making a statement in regards to who we played. We wanted to put the foot to the pedal and show who we are,” Narduzzi said. “That's the way it's supposed to be. If you want to win a championship, that's how you take care of business.”

“Before we break it down and go play football, [offensive coordinator Kade] Bell tells us, ‘We’re Steph Curry.’ We’re out there to facilitate the ball, and when a shot’s there, you’ve got to take it,” Holstein said, referring to the Golden State Warriors sharpshooter. “When that run is there, I’ve got to take it.”

Every time the Penguins began to put together any semblance of positive momentum, the Panthers ruthlessly dashed any hope.

Youngstown State was able to find the end zone once before halftime, converting on a 3rd-and-7 when quarterback Beau Brungard connected with Cyrus Traugh for 25 yards on a screen pass. But the Panthers quickly and cruelly answered, needing just one play — an 82-yard pass from Holstein to Censere Lee — to add another touchdown.

Narduzzi’s father, Bill, was a coach himself. In fact, he coached at Youngstown State back in the 1980s while his son played linebacker for the Penguins. But the school’s decision not to renew the elder Narduzzi’s contract following the 1985 season has stuck with his family all the way through to 2024.

Pat Narduzzi told his players to give him this one game. In a 12-game season, 11 belong to the players and the assistant coaches, but Narduzzi needed this one.

“I asked them on Tuesday to go get one for my dad out there. Just try to make it personal,” Narduzzi said. “They took the challenge and went out there and tattooed them pretty good. My dad would be fired up as he was watching up there.”
