One hundred years ago. One hundred hears ago to the day, the Battle of the Somme began. On this first day the British Empire took over 57,000 casualties. Fifty seven thousand in one day. It was the worst day in British military history. The battle lasted until November 18, by which there were over 1,300,200 casualties on both sides. And the result: "inclusive." I think I read one time that in the end the British gained five miles. It is nauseating. Nauseating history.
