Scholarly tackle football is such an American sport. It is land acquisitive. It is intensely passionate. It is violent. It is for the attention deficient: you've got 24 hours to celebrate or to grieve and then it's on to the the next game. It is ahistorical: an average 25% player turnover annually. After four years virtually no one remains who played in last week's glorious triumph or excrutiating defeat.
