Doug Collins put the ball in Michael Jordan's hands, creating Michael Jordan, the transcendent cultural icon. Collins, Jordan's favorite coach, was fired and replaced by Phil Jackson, Collins' assistant. Collins was fired because he got tired of hearing Tex Winter badger him about instituting the triangle offense, which took the ball out of Michael's hands.
