Trumpists are devoted to the Idea of Trump. It’s an abstraction that reality does not change.
For example: If Trump said today, “I made it all up. Biden won legitimately”, Trump supporters wouldn’t believe him!
They are enamored with an Idea, the idea of a universally famous figure with no experience with the crazy idea that he could become president, to accomplish the impossible. His policy positions didn’t matter. His baggage didn’t matter. They were along for the ride, not the destination. And then he did it. He accomplished the impossible! For Trumpists it was Hoosiers, Rudy, all of those movies, rolled into one.
An idea is bigger than a man and Trump, for them, was the Idea of Trump instantiated. He became a demigod. “Did you just see what he did? He won the damn presidency!” Now he could do no wrong. He was the best president ever; whatever he did and didn’t do was right. Everything that anyone else did or didn’t do, said or didn’t say, was wrong. Critics were just trying to tear down him and with him their Idea. He was the only legitimate president who ever could be. There was 45 and there was nothing after 45. History ended with 45.
Isn’t that the reality of his support?
If this is accurate for some Trumpists then no one, not even Trump, not even a confession, can shake them of their Idea of Trump. In a word, it's a cult.
