I have been thinking off and on since reading of Jeff Bezos' decision, is there an example of a nation that democratically overthrew their democracy and then democratically restored democracy? I can't think of one but it would be a pretty small sample size I bet. I thought of Germans democratically electing the Nazi Party and Hitler in the 1930's, which of course ended German democracy. It is true that Germans got democracy back--but that was after unconditional military surrender to the Allies. They didn't have a chance to vote Hitler out. It seems to me that that democracy-to-dictatorship is a one-way street. What dictator has ever submitted to free and fair elections with a real opposition after he has assumed power? I can't think of any.
I believe trumpie that he will do the things that he has threatened to do in a second term, that it will be a vengeance tour, that he will stifle, even by turning the U.S. military on American civilians, any dissent. I believe him when he says that there will be "one violent day"; I believe that there will be extra-official violence by civilian militias as well as official violence by police departments, the quasi-military like the National Guard, Homeland Security and the military, "if necessary". I believe him when he says he will be a dictator on just one day, Day One. I believe him when he says that he will turn the Justice Department loose on his political enemies. I believe that he has the judges to rubber stamp those political persecutions. I believe him when he says that he will begin mass deportations of immigrants. I believe him when he says he will cow and silence a truly free press. All of those are the pillars of democracy, here and worldwide. For all of the foregoing I believe that trumpie's expected election will be the end of Democracy in America.
I have said what I will do. I will spend my remaining time alive and as much money as I have until it runs out traveling the country joining protests wherever they are when he starts his repeated actions. I will not be armed, I will engage in no violence. If violence comes to me, I will submit and not fight back. "It is a far, far better thing I do than I have done before." And if in protesting I take a dirt nap, it will be "a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.”
