City 2 Arsenal 1. 57'
A one goal lead in soccer keeps both teams on their toes. A two goal lead and the leading squad tend to relax. I would like to relax.
The Guardian:
[Why strange?]
After 10 minutes of struggle, this is a brilliant way for City to restore their lead. Sterling plays a pass back to Gundogan from the left and Lichtsteiner falls asleep. Gundogan instantly pops a pass over the Arsenal defence, leaving Sterling to cushion the ball across the face of goal for Aguero, who isn’t going to miss from two yards out! City have been wobbling, but their main striker has two and they’re in front again.
42 min: City are beginning to lose the midfield battle, which isn’t surprising given that Fernandinho is playing in defence. Arsenal swamp them again and stream forward. Aubameyang’s played into space down the inside-right channel, but his shot’s deflected over. City deal with the corner.
[Another writer wrote in December that Fernandinho was the answer, not the problem.]
Half-time: Manchester City 2-1 Arsenal
A strange half comes to a close. City made a blistering start, took the lead and then entered panic mode after Laurent Koscielny’s equaliser. But Sergio Aguero’s second goal of the afternoon means they lead. This is fascinatingly poised.

GOAL! Manchester City 2-1 Arsenal (Aguero, 43 min)
This is magnificent.

39 min: This is very entertaining. Kolasinac has a dig from the edge of the City area, stinging Ederson’s palms. Then Torreira sees a powerful drive blocked. Lacazette almost makes something from nothing and then City attack, De Bruyne leading a counter. You attack, we attack. Eventually Arsenal quell the danger. They’re playing on City’s anxiety.
Manchester City 2 Arsenal 1, HT
Hoo doggie, did City need that second goal. Very frustrating for Arsenal to give up a goal in the first minute and then in the last minute before halftime.
GOAL! Manchester City 1-1 Arsenal (Koscielny, 11 min)
Arsenal equalise after the longest 11 minutes in their entire history!
The corner comes in from Sead Kolasinac from the left. Monreal darts to the near post and flicks it into the six-yard box, where Koscileny powers through the bodies to head past Ederson from close range! What a response from Arsenal, who were looking on the verge of total collapse! As for City, it’s another squandered lead.

My New Year’s Resolution for 2019 is to be just as annoying, argumentative & insufferably right about everything as I’ve been in 2018. Zero apologies in advance to all whiny PC-crazed snowflake imbeciles who will be horrifically offended by absolutely everything I say or write.

Okay Piers, what say ye about today's Main Event?

I’ve zero scientific or logical evidence to support this absurd prediction, but I fancy us to nick a shock result today.
My weird confidence is down to Arsenal’s best striker duo since Henry/Bergkamp. Come on lads @Aubameyang7 @LacazetteAlex - prove I’m not insane. 👊 #mcfcvafc

You break your New Year's Resolution today, Piersie. You are wrong. City will prove you insane.

United Hold On
A 9’ goal from Marcus Rashford gave them the lead and although outplayed in the second half they made it stand. 1-0 FT.
United are playing for Solskjaer. They have dropped points only once, last week, since his appointment. They have come from far back in the table but are now right there with Arsenal and Chelsea for fourth. Who is to doubt them? Not I. I think they will overtake both.

According to eminent basketballtolgist Zach Lowe Pat Riley is looking to move a veteran or two or six during the trade window on February 7. Lowe says Riles could get at least a second round draft pick for Wayne Ellington.
Lowe says the "Heat" are interested in moving guys who are "out of the rotation." Ellington has not been rotating this year so he fits that criteria. But how do you define Erik Spoelstra's "rotation?" That is a big part of the problem from the players' perspective. Erik's used something like 19 different starting lineups.
Giving it as much play as reasonable I think Dion Waiters would fit "out of rotation" and using Lowe's trade return for Ellington as a marker then Dion Waiters, who has floundered after a hot start back from injury, should fetch more; no, not a first rounder but a couple of twos plus a player.
But what of James Johnson? He's in the rotation and should not be. JJ is done. What could you get for him, more precisely, what could you get for his salary hit on the cap? I don't see anything. If I was a rival GM (I'm not.) I wouldn't give up even a two for JJ and his salary.
Erik Spoelstra suffers from Overchoice. He--and Pat Riley acknowledges this--has too many similar players of similar skill and similar length. Spoelstra makes choices based on minutiae in computer game simulations. It forces decisions based on differences in computer simulations that are not real differences, but he has to choose.
Spoelstra is in this position because of his commitment to the concept that he came up with himself: positionless basketball. LeBron James knows no position! But Spoelstra doesn't have James anymore and most NBA players have one or two specific skills that define them for a specific position on the court: outside shooting, especially from range (guard); rebounding (center), defense; shot blocking (center), play making (point guard).
Miami has got a glut of guys who are okay at some of those, great at none, terrible at one or two. Believers in positionless basketball say it puts the emphasis back on team basketball: you don't have a specific role, you have a general role to make the team better. Do whatever that requires. Players cannot do "whatever;" they can only do what their skills allow them to do. Forcing players to do everything, rather than what they are good at, focuses on the weakest link in their skill chain. That is not good for the player's psyche and leads to benching, which ditto.
Riley and Andy Elisburg have to relieve Erik Spoelstra of Overchoice and get rid of some of these interchangeable parts.

Two BIG matches today, one starting in about half an hour—Lester hosts United, and a couple hours later in the City Arsenal visit. City must win to stay within hailing distance of Liverpool; Arsenal and United must win to keep up with Chelsea for fourth and...all those things can’t happen. Something’s got to give today.

Wtf in Virginia
Does anybody vet candidates for governor in Virginia? Anybody do any opposition research?
"Ralph" "Northam," a DEMOCRAT (!) was elected governor of Virginia in November, 2017, just over a year ago. Had a primary; had a Republican opponent in the general. This jackanapes got elected and now it comes out.
Northam is a pediatric neurosurgeon. There was a bill sponsored by another Democrat in the Virginia House or whatever they call it that provided for late term abortions--7-9 months! Northam defended the bill, said based on his experience, that such abortions are,
“done in cases where there may be severe deformities. There may be a fetus that’s not viable. So in this particular example, if a mother’s in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered, the infant would be kept comfortable, the infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired. And then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”
And I can tell you exactly what would happen then Ralphie boy: you would be arrested for first degree murder! What are you Josef Mengele?
Republicans calling him a supporter of infanticide were "shameful and disgusting," said Northam. That's what you said, you fucking BABY MURDERER!
Has no one examined Northam's practice to see if there were "stillborn" babies at his hospitals who maybe were born alive and then "died?"
Okay, so that just came up this week when Northam gave an interview, maybe nobody anticipated a baby murderer getting the Democratic nomination for governor, I get that. What about this then?
His Medical School yearbook (p 105)
Virginia GOP: Did you ever look at the motherfucker's medical school yearbook? Yeah, didn't notice anything untoward.

Northam has admitted to being one of the two guys in that photo. The New York Times says it is unclear which of the two is Northam. (?) Says it could be Northam on the left in blackface...(?) Quasi's--ex Quasi's--come here.
Are you fucking blind? That's not a fucking costume, you nitwits, that's a real black guy. Northam dressed in full KKK regalia, maybe borrowed from my brother I said maybe...Anyway.
That is from MEDICAL SCHOOL! Not from high school, not from college, MEDICAL SCHOOL!

Northam has not resigned. Senator Harris and Secretary Castro, both Demo candidates for prez have called on him to resign but Northam thinks it will take time for the healing. Fine. IMPEACH HIS ASS! GET HIM THE FUCK OUT OF THERE! GO!
NORTHAM OUT!
St Louis Police Shooting: Nate Drinking on Duty
Hendren AND his partner, still unnamed like he is a rape victim or something, both were drinking while on duty and were chilling at Nate’s crib when Katlyn game over for a game of Russian roulette. Tight ship SLMPD, tight ship they run out there.
