Carville: Trump won't debate President Biden

Link. 17:18

Man, I don't know shit. He accepted! Before accepting, he said "anytime, anywhere." Now, he won't go? James' reasoning is that Trump only does something when it's in his best interests. He didn't debate in the primaries because he would have gotten touched up. Not in his interests. Said he'd testify at the hush money trial, then didn't. Not in his interests; followed his lawyers' advice. But this was so public, man. Over and over again: "anytime, anywhere". He accepted immediately. I have been so wrong but I will absolutely gobsmacked if Trumpie no-shows.

Details, Details

This is the best I can do. It’s off my phone. Moze has just completed the change scam with the matronly store cashier. He grabs Addie to make a quick getaway before they're discovered.

I have circled the reflection in the glass display cases behind the cash register. They capture the getaway that is not captured by the direct camera. Stop action, as in these stills do not convey the quickened pace of the two as they exit the store and round the corner and get into their car before the old woman realizes she has been scammed. You can watch the scene in action here, it starts at 23:55.

Closeup, Moze leaving, Addie in tow, from above:

Addie, being pulled, making her getaway.

 Different frame.

You hear the tires squeal as the car pulls off.

The production crew was masterful in conveying speed through sound. In the adorable scene much later where the fall of Trixie Delight is set in motion, Addie plays the dutiful girl, coming down unhurried smoothing her hair, in a cute dress, into the coffee shop where Moze is eating waffles. She sits down chats inanely and briefly and then announces, "Well, I think I'll go up and polish my shoes" πŸ™„ So out of character, that Moze briefly looks after her quizzically as she departs at an unhurried, girlish pace. When she rounds the corner to rendezvous with Imogene her little feet hit the stairs with a hurried tap-tap-tap of her shoes on the stairs as she rushes up once she is out of Moze's sight. It is sublime, subtle filmmaking.

Paper Moon, Details

I did a post on this topic but didn't cover this detail. There are just soo many details in this movie. This one is on casting.

Now look at this.

Are you kidding me? This is the second widow business scene. A "poorly" widow and her six children. Look at the widow's face. Now look at the faces of the visible children. They are identical. All blonde, all pinched faces and pointy noses, identical to their mother. The casting director worked overtime to get child actors who looked exactly like their mother for this scene. It is incomparable attention to detail. And to state the obvious, looks inheritance is imperfect. Tatum and Ryan O'Neal were real-life father-daughter and besides being blonde, I don't think they looked particularly alike.

There is one other detail, snips of which I made several days ago, but they didn't turn out well on my computer. I am going to try with my iPhone to see if I can get the detail clearer.

There was a lot of amazing work done in this film. It is a masterpiece.

I searched my blog for "Details" (in re Paper Moon):

The sky outside the tall windows of the courtroom, which have blinds drawn over them, is starting to darken. It’s disorienting in here.

πŸ˜‚πŸ˜ Maggie, you will never top that.

 Goal!

Okay, I read the Reuters poll

Exclusive: One in 10 Republicans less likely to vote for Trump after guilty verdict, Reuters/Ipsos poll finds

That’s their headline.

The two-day poll, conducted in the hours after the Republican presidential candidate's conviction…

Head-to-head, Biden 41% Trumpie 39%. Within margin of error (2%). “In line” with their April poll showing 40%-40%. So the needle didn’t move out of line immediately after Convict34.

Reuters own report leads with,

Ten percent of Republican registered voters say they are less likely to vote for Donald Trump following his felony conviction…

So that’s bad news for him.

The potential loss of a tenth of his party's voters is more significant for Trump than the stronger backing of more than a third of Republicans, since many of the latter would be likely to vote for him regardless of the conviction.

Among independent registered voters, 25% said Trump's conviction made them less likely to support him in November…

The verdict could shake up the race between Trump, who was U.S. president from 2017-2021, and Democratic President Joe Biden. U.S. presidential elections are typically decided by thin margins in a handful of competitive swing states, meaning that even small numbers of voters defecting from their candidates can have a big impact.

So, instant reaction: The instant polls show that Trumpie was hurt a little. Now to see if these have legs.

Guilt Complex: Trump’s Felony Convictions Are a Big Political Problem

Even for a politician who skates away from scandal, this week complicates Trump’s path to election.

Trump simply cannot beat President Joe Biden relying solely on the votes of people who think his legal travails are a politically motivated scam, and who cheer Trump not in spite of his transgressions but because of them. Or, more specifically, because they thrill to the outrage and indignation Trump inspires among his adversaries.

… Trump’s only path to victory is a coalition that includes many Republicans and independents who find him deplorable but think a second Biden term would be even more so.

That is why — even as the full consequences likely will emerge slowly — this week was easily the worst so far this year for Trump and the best for Biden.

[Okay, I’ve read enough, I get the point. I’m surprised, I must say. I’m more surprised at the polls, one of which was the subject of the immediately preceding post. There’s another one in the Forbes article that I initially read, but I couldn’t make heads or tails of it from Malcolm’s write-up. 49% of Indies think he should drop out. I am sincerely surprised at that. I never thought that Alvin Bragg’s case would move the political needle guilty or not guilty! I really didn’t. Which is why I bolded this writer’s “too early to tell” disclaimer. I mean, the motherfucker (Trumpie, not the writer) raised over $50,000,000 (!😳!) in the first 24 after the verdict. I don’t know if that Morning Consult-Indie-49%  represents a needle move. I assume it does, but I don’t know. What was it a month ago? If it does represent a real shift I want to see if that first-of-first poll has legs. My gut is that it if it’s real, it will fade. And I want to know if there is a corresponding shift in the head-to-head polls. Until there is a sufficient sample size of evidence showing both of those things, I will think that Trumpie is still the favorite to win in November.]

First poll >34 convictions. 49% of Indies: Trump Should Drop Out

Why Dems Shouldn't be Shy about Trump's Conviction

Too many in the party are allowing Trump and the Right to define a major moment in the campaign

Wherein Dan Pfeiffer, Senior Advisor to the President of the United States, Barack Obama argues that other Democrats, but not President Biden, should "take the gloves off" with Trump and Trumpists.

That message, brought to you by Republicans from 2020 still has legs, stronger, longer legs in 2024 than in 2020. I would address it: Dear President Biden.

Pfeiffer says the president should take the gloves off in the first debate in late June. I think he should counter this right now:

After the verdict came in, Trump went right to the cameras to spew a firehose’s worth of lies about the case. In an obviously coordinated effort, most major Republican officeholders put out statements slamming the verdict and reaffirming their support for Trump within minutes of the news breaking. MAGA media personalities went into overdrive, firing up the base with often dangerous rhetoric.

As Trump had a bigger button than Kim Jong Un, so President Biden has a bigger hose with which to spew than does Trump today.

The president should give multiple campaign speeches right now before rabid audiences of Democrats in the largest, most raucous venues he can. I agree with Pfeiffer that,

...if you want people to know something, you have to tell them and then tell them again and again. Once you are so sick of saying something that you might puke, you probably need to say it a couple more times.

Over and over again,

He's a criminal!

He's a rapist!

He says he will be a dictator on Day One! And he will be. Unless we stop him.

President Biden's speech, given over and over again, should be modeled on FDR's campaign speech in Madison Square Garden on October 31, 1936.

In 1932 the issue was the restoration of American democracy; and the American people were in a mood to win. They did win. In 1936 the issue is the preservation of their victory. Again they are in a mood to win. Again they will win.

President Biden should take the gloves off against Trump of course, but also against MAGA extremist voters, MAGA Republican officeholders (there are none other), and the Supreme Court.

Dan Pfeiffer writes that Trump's "bizarre, rambling press conference, where he whined" was "at the expense of a message that actually persuades voters..."

Persuade voters? Trump doesn't have to persuade voters. He has got the election won right now if the election were held today. He is the favorite to win in an electoral landslide right now. He has raised $50M since his conviction.

No! The president should go right after those unpersuadables bare-knuckled. I don't want their votes, those of the nearly 800 who were convicted in the Jan. 6 insurrection. They are criminals. Their criminal Leader has said he will pardon them. I don't want the votes of the millions of them, and the hundreds of MAGA lawmakers who,

...attack the integrity and honor of American Government itself. Those who suggest that, are already aliens to the spirit of American democracy. Let them emigrate and try their lot under some foreign flag in which they have more confidence.

Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me—and I welcome their hatred.

Against them,

...we have only just begun to fight.

...For these things, too, and for a multitude of others like them, we have only just begun to fight.

FDR was winning in 1936. He was winning BIG. We are LOSING. We will not win wasting our time and money persuading the unpersuadable. We will win by persuading the persuadable in Wisconsin, North Carolina, Nevada, Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania and Michigan,

 Pfeiffer:

Okay, Donald Trump’s been convicted of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to hide his extramarital affair from voters during the 2016 election.

It seems like a big deal, right?

Well, only if we make it.

Democrats took a decidedly different approach. The President did not appear before the cameras, and his campaign released a written statement. Many Democrats stayed silent, and those who did speak tended to say something relatively anodyne about how we should respect the rule of law.

... I believe Democrats should take a more aggressive stance than they have in the last 24 hours.

I disagree with his old friend David Axelrod.

I don’t disagree with this advice that my old friend David Axelrod offered in an interview with the New York Times about how Biden should address the conviction:

I may be alone in this, but I think he should address the convictions with some sobriety. It was a sad and stunning day for our country, but we’re a country of laws, not men. That is a bedrock principle of our Constitution and our democracy, and even presidents are subject to it.

He’s a serious person addressing a serious matter. The President doesn’t need too much mustard on the hot dog.

No! We want mustard on the dog. We want the hottest mustard possible layered on the dog so thickly you only taste the mustard.

Now for the rest of the party…

2. Dems Other Than Biden Should Be Way More Aggressive

One of President Obama’s cardinal rules of politics is that if you don’t talk about the giant elephant in the room, the voters will wonder what you are trying to hide. Trump’s conviction while running for President is a giant fucking elephant.

No! Democrats LED BY BIDEN. Biden must be on the campaign trail now, because he is losing now, in Madison Square Garden, in the Wells Fargo Center, in PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, in the United Center, in the Greensboro Coliseum, in the Footprint Center in Phoenix, the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Little Caesar's Arena in Detroit, Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, State Farm Arena in Atlanta, especially in John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville. The president's message should be the same in all and repeated over and over again until he pukes: We have just begun to fight: against the criminals, the rapists, the convicts, the would-be dictator and his bootlickers. They hate me and they hate you. I welcome their hatred.

I agree with Kristol

Bill Kristol
@BillKristol
Simple-minded me, thinking of messages that might work for the Biden campaign:
1. Donald Trump is a convicted criminal.
2. It's bad to be a convicted criminal.
3. Don't elect the Republican nominee--he's a convicted criminal.

Biden campaign:
Oh man, that is SO unsophisticated.
