"There are moments when a community must decide what it stands for."

When I got a clear view, I immediately stated the case clearly, both here and to my Jewish friend:

Israel's actions in Gaza were the defining issue of our time.

My friend mocked me. "TDIOT". It was clever, so close to IDIOT.

I beseeched him to see if he had eyes. I warned him. Future generations will ask, "What did you do during the war, daddy?" There was some little danger to American Jewry for their willful blindness. I soothed him. I did not think that it would amount to anything in the long run.

He was outraged when a close relative, in a teaching position, became the subject of verbal harassment, her students writing to the administration, criticizing it for not issuing a "trigger warning" when an Israeli scholar spoke to the class.

Fatigued at that moment, I responded callously. He exploded. A brief rupture ensued until I apologized unreservedly.

It became the defining issue in our friendship of thirty years. Now, anything touching on Israel is a third rail that we cannot touch without fatality.

"There are moments when a community must decide what it stands for."

Each of us has an individual duty to speak, no matter how puny our voice, on the defining issue of our time.

"We cannot remain silent"

I am Benjamin Harris and this is Public Occurrences.

"We cannot remain silent: Amy Acton for governor"

There are moments when a community must decide what it stands for, when its institutions have a duty to speak and when silence itself becomes a statement.

Ohio has reached such a moment.

Vivek Ramaswamy, seeking the highest office in this state, has produced a campaign advertisement that weaponizes the sexual abuse his opponent, Amy Acton, suffered as a child. People across the political spectrum have rightly condemned it.

But condemnation has to mean something. Our politics have been debased for a decade, but this we will not accept. A candidate who uses childhood sexual abuse as a weapon against the person who endured it has crossed a line that Ohioans should defend, whatever their party.

We are better than this. We have a responsibility to show it.

Today, we endorse Democrat Amy Acton for governor.

This reverses a policy we announced just months ago. Readers told us they did not need our guidance in races for governor, U.S. Senate and president. They wanted us to devote our attention to down-ballot races, especially those for judge, where reliable information can be harder to find. We listened, and we have done that work.

Now, a wave of readers is asking us to recognize another obligation. They want their chief news source to take a stand on what this community and its institutions will accept from those who seek to lead us.

They are right. We made our endorsement policy to serve our readers. We cannot let it become a reason to remain silent when we believe Ohio faces a choice this consequential.

And our endorsement of Acton rests on more than Ramaswamy’s failure to meet a basic standard of decency. She has earned consideration on her own record, her preparation and her commitment to the people she seeks to serve.

...

When our readers identified the questions they wanted answered, we devoted a 15-part series to seeking those answers. Acton participated. So did Libertarian Don Kissick.

Ramaswamy refused.

Those were Ohioans asking about Ohio’s future. Someone seeking the authority to govern them owed them answers.

...

Donald Trump’s endorsement cannot substitute for accountability, preparation or judgment. And Ramaswamy’s decision to release this vile advertisement reveals a failure of judgment that Ohio cannot afford in its governor.

...

This election asks Ohioans to look beyond party loyalty and consider the standards we expect our leaders to uphold. How we answer will say something enduring about us: what we value, what we will tolerate and what we believe public service should be.

Stand with decency on Nov. 3. Reject the debasement Ramaswamy has brought to this campaign. Choose the candidate who has poured her heart into serving Ohioans.

Elect Amy Acton governor.

Exit polls suggest a rebuke of Netanyahu but no clear winner in Israel’s election

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli voters delivered a sharp rebuke Tuesday to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with exit polls indicating voters gave his opponents a solid majority in the next parliament. Whether those disparate parties can form a government is uncertain and will likely take weeks of haggling.

AP

Israel's system is complicated and fragmenting. Still, I don't get how an anti-Netanyahoo "solid majority" "will likely take weeks" to form a government.

Israeli Jews, this is your system, this is your government, this is your state. You know the stakes.

Live: Israeli exit polls indicate deadlock in pivotal election as Netanyahu faces main rival Eisenkot

For me, this is the last chance for the Jewish PEOPLE of Israel. Netanyahoo, on trial at home for corruption, under indictment internationally for war crimes, and his settlers' coalition must be rejected UNEQUIVOCALLY. If not, as looks likely, if he and his coalition are returned, then my opposition to this Israel is transferred where it belongs in a representative democracy, onto the Jewish citizenry of Israel.

Future attacks, which are a certainty, on Israeli Jews by their enemies will not warrant intervention by the United States, if I have my way. The United States must not, it must not, intervene to perpetuate so loathsome a state from a debased citizenry bent on perpetuating it. I utterly condemn any attacks on civilians in war, retrospectively, prospectively or hypothetically, but as my American Jewish friend has said of Israeli attacks on civilians in Gaza and elsewhere, and throughout Israel's existence, "those things happen in war."

SAO PAULO, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has left the country for the United States after losing Sunday's presidential election and refusing to comply with a Supreme Court order to hand over his passports, two sources said.

Hotspurs 120 Excremento (0-4) 103

Beans 125 Rust (0-4) 124 OT. (Who else but Jayson Tatum? At the buzzer in OT)

Not officially final but I'm calling it. 3:11 left, Mamdani City (0-4, now 1-4) 104 Zollner Pistons (3-0, now 3-1) 89.

So now there will be fo' o'fers: Rust, Miamuh, Excremento, and Katrina City.

HT in Peoples' Square Garden, Mamdani City 51 Zollner Pistons 50

There are yet five winless teams in the National Basketball Association. Miami has lost the most, 4, but then the defending champeen "Knickers" are going for their fourth L too; also running are everlosers Rust (winning :o in Beantown 102-101), Excremento ("trailing" 99-71 in Alamo) and Katrina City.

It's a simple game

"Can't overthink basketball. For me, my shot not going in. I'm not going to overthink that. This year, I'm just taking more 3s. I mean that's that's really it."

-Bam Adebayo after his 8 pts, 3/10 (0/5) against D.

Why is he taking more threes? Because he wants to even though Eric Spoelstra would rather him not? Or because Spoelstra wants him to clear out of the paint for Giannis?

What?

Giannis Antetokounmpo can opt out of his contract in the summer.

๐Ÿคข๐Ÿคฎ

"The offense, though, will be a much harder challenge for Spoelstra and his charges."

-The Defector (previous)

Yeah?

-We outshot Ice 48%-47%.
-Zollner did outclass us 53%-38%
-We shot identically to Queens, 43%
-D. outshot us by one little peepy point 46%-45%.

Shooting does not explain 0-4.

-Against Ice it was rebounding, -18, and pts off turnovers, -14.
-Against Z it was shooting; (rebs -4).
-Against Queens it was rebounding, -11, and pts off turnovers, -10.
-Against D. it was missed FTs and rebounding, -9.

Somebody explain to me how a team with Giannis Antetokounmpo (9.9 reb/game career, 9.5 2026/27)and Bam Adebayo (9, 7.3) gets outrebounded in all four games, and badly, in three. Other than the obvious: Eric Spoelstra does not have his Bigs playing in positions (which don't exist since Spo plays positionless) where they can get boards.

Ditto

Anyway, Miami lost to the Dallas Mavericks on Monday night and dropped to 0-4 for the season. Worse than that, the team has looked lost and overwhelmed in every single game.
...
Let's start with the (slightly) less worrying side of the ball, the defense. In theory, adding a former Defensive Player of the Year like Antetokounmpo to a team that had a player who should have, in my opinion, won at least one of those awards himself (Adebayo) should have made the Heat a nightmare to play against. That's a lot of length and switching ability for teams to contend with, and it felt like the two of them could work together to wall off the paint and force teams into contested jumpers. In practice, though, it's a bit of a "hat on a hat" situation, as both Antetokounmpo and Adebayo look consistently confused about where each should be at any given time.

Ditto. Ditto.

The Miami "Dolphins" have won more games than the Miami "Heat"

Good morning Heaties!๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

"I feel like Bam is still tryna’ find his footing because Giannis doesn’t give a fuck. Giannis came to Miami doing what Giannis does, Giannis thinks. And I feel like Bam is kinda’ out of place a few times, kinda’ understanding what kind of spacing, ‘When is it my turn? How can we make this two-man game work?’”

That is ex-NBA journeyman Matt Barnes on his podcast. That is also clickbait for Barnes' podcast. Barnes doesn't know anything, he is just watching some of the games. That doesn't mean Barnes is wrong. I read the same thing in the box score. I believe that head coach Eric Spoelstra has totally misused this duo, which should have been formidable as a Two Big, bungled Bam's usage rate and has an ass-backwards game plan for this roster that is worse than the sum of its parts. Bam does look confused as to his role and lost on the court. It is not just Bam. "Multiple players", that was the reporting, said that there was a lack of communication on the court. I understood Spoelstra's plan for Bam and Giannis to be that on defense the three other players would funnel the offense toward the dual Black Holes. I assumed, I needed read this, that the obvious way to use a 6' 11" MVP and the 6' 9" muscle and hard body of the face of the franchise was to play a Two Big, Great Wall, Twin Towers game on both ends of the court.

"Face of the franchise":  Let us remind ourselves: Bam Adebayo is the "Heat's" long-time CAPTAIN! Pat Riley said offseason that Bam was untouchable in trade. Semi-joking said hyperbolically the he might trade Bam for Victor Wembanyama and eight first round draft picks. Such a player cannot take a back seat to anyone. That has happened, it's not the only thing that has happened but it has happened. Giannis is nearly all correct to think that he would continue to do Giannis things on his new team. But Bam is right if he thought that their coach would scheme a way for him to continue to do Bam things, one of which is to be the team leader. Giannis does not get to call the shots. Spoelstra does. It is Spoelstra's call to devise a system to make Bam and Giannis even better together than each are individually. That has not happened, it's not the only thing that has not happened, but it has not happened.

This team is a shocking, embarrassing 0-4. That's on Eric Spoelstra. Bam is soldiering on as best he can. So are all the other players. It has not worked.
