The monthly jobs figures were released today. 80,000 jobs were added in June, the size of Mansfield speaking-of-Ohio. Not good. Until last month I had used these first Fridays of the month to question, less frequently to commend, President Obama's economic performance. Then the light went on. "The president proposes, Congress disposes," is the saying. President Obama has proposed. The Republican Congress has not been disposed to dispose. It was a light that only made darkness visible.
From the news reports today it is still the president who will get blamed for the tepid recovery from recession. "The buck stops here," Harry Truman put on his desk. So it does and it may cost Obama his job, the latest polls have him with a tepid three point lead over Governor Romney nationally. This election will be decided on the economy as most elections in America always have been. Romney proposes more of what the Republican Congress has disposed. I entirely agree with those like the New York Times and Paul Krugman, whose headline is above, that Obama needs to beat Romney like a rented mule over "this Republican economy." Before stopping at presidents desks, bucks start in Congress.
