Miami's new professional soccer club will be known as some version of "Miami Freedom." Ownership, and at this point ownership means the Mas brothers, Cuban exiles, whose father, Jorge Mas Canosa, was the leading and most obnoxious of Greater Miami's crazed Cuban community, has registered four names for copyright: Miami Freedom Football Club, Miami Freedom United, a bone tossed to previous lead David Beckham, Miami Freedom F.C. and Miami Freedom so you can pretty clearly see that they have narrowed the field of possibilities to...basically none other. The "Freedom Tower" in Miami was Ellis Island for Cuban refugees. If they think about, which I hope and pray they do not, they forgot Miami Mas Freedom which would really be truth in marketing. The Mas' don't give a damn about anything other than Cuban Miami.
Well, I was a supporter of Miami "Fusion," a perfect name by my lights, I am not Cuban and I will not the attend the games of, nor otherwise support, a team so clearly an extension of one powerful family's ethnic heritage and political obsession and in a stadium that, no doubt, will be built by Mas. Move the team to Havana. Better, you move to Havana. You are not Miamians, Mas family; you are not Americans, not even Cuban-Americans; it gives you too much credit to say you have dual loyalties: you have only one, to Cuba.
