My son's friend and fellow band member John had a cold weekend before last when they practiced together. Early the next week my son got sick. I got it from him last week. John's 78 year-old father also got it. John is a lawyer. He never missed work because of it. My son is a social worker, he never missed work. John texted him this morning that he tested positive for COVID. Ah jeez.
None of us had classic symptoms of COVID: no fever, no dry, hacking cough, no loss of taste or smell. Both my son and I had deep lung congestion. When we coughed, it was painful. Very little to no mucous though. That deep lung congestion has disappeared in both of us.
I don't know what prompted John to get tested. It has been two weeks since he was really symptomatic. My son had it for about five days and said he is more than 90% over any symptoms. I'm 90% over them and it will be a week tomorrow.
It has lingered, though. A cold lasts a couple of days. It either goes away or, if you burn the candle at both ends, can turn into the flu, which lasts a few days to a week more. I did note how transmissible this "cold" was. My son and I had daily contact when he was symptomatic but aside from a hug in greeting and in leaving we were not in close contact. Only in hindsight can I see that this was a little more than a cold but not quite the flu, a precise constellation of symptoms that I do not recall experiencing previously. The big difference, though, was duration. A cold doesn't level and stay for six days.
My son is unsure if he is going to get tested, although we both assume that he is + since John is. He could quarantine if he is positive. I don't think I am going to get tested. What would I do if I am +, quarantine? That's my fucking life anyway! All things told, I am confident I have COVID as well. Fucking PISSES me off.
