Servant is a dense work. You elide over details at your peril. Three here:
In Vasya's office Olya advises Vasya to thank Dmitry for "finding the money" to bail the government out. I will, he responds. We can do it now: Olya. But Vasya is too distracted by official business to make the phone call.
Then in the bon voyage airport scene. Dmitry pours champagne for the foursome. "Let's drink to Vasily Petrovich" Dmitry. "Your name will be written in textbooks as the most hardcore anti-corruption fighter." "I hope the textbooks don't mention the measures I took." So President Goloborodko is aware that he has committed an ethical crime, whether misdemeanor or felony. And he is aware of whose instrument he was. Olya says, we have to catch our plane in ten minutes:
Olya: "Vasya, you wanted to thank him."
Vasya: "Thank you. Let's have a toast."
And then my favorite character shows up, the only appearance beloved Oksana makes in this episode:
Clearly these normal Ukrainians who Vasya has snatched from oblivion are living the good life on the government's dime.
We now turn the page to E5 (which may be a clunker).
