Mexico wins tariff reprieve after president's 'excellent' Trump call

That Reuters headline ought to be shortened to "Mexico wins".

 5:25 pm:

Trump Shortens His Phantom Big Stick

Tariffs on Mexico announced paused for 30 more days. Shortly thereafter, tariffs on much of Canadian trade paused 30 days. PM Trudeau said his tariffs on U.S. trade will not be relaxed under all Trump tariffs on Canadian goods are removed.

Countries throughout the world, China, Ukraine, should recognize this game: threaten dire and negotiate. They should note that there are no criteria for his acts, that therefore they are just negotiating tools. What "criteria" were met, first by Mexico, then by Canada? In Mexico's case, a phone call:

1a) "I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for, President Sheinbaum. Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard, together, on the Border, both in terms of stopping Illegal Aliens from entering the United States and, likewise, stopping Fentanyl. Thank you to President Sheinbaum for your hard work and cooperation!”

The criteria that Mexico met was nothing more substantive than "a very good" phone call.

1b) In Canada's case there was no phone call, much less a very good" one. Trump hates Justin Trudeau. Trump paused the tariffs on Mexico and begrudgingly on Canada because they,

2) Are in violation of the US-Mexico-Canada agreement that Trump I negotiated!

3) Because U.S. stock markets are down:

The market is in the red during Trump’s presidency in part because of the uncertainty the administration’s trade policy has caused. The Nasdaq has fallen nearly 8% since Trump took office, and is down 10% from its December peak, ending Thursday in correction territory. The S&P 500 is down more than 4% since Trump’s inauguration. Businesses have paused hiring, consumer confidence has plunged and investors have shifted out of stocks and into safe havens like government bonds.

Which any first year econ. major, or even a history major, could tell you would be the result, which Trump as a businessman, knows.

Speak loudly and carry a big shtick.
