Republicans in Alaska and in Congress are opening investigations into the Democrats' trick. However, per nytimes "stacking the ballot" as it is called, is "a common and generally legal tactic in politics". I don't know the implied exceptions to "generally legal" but  Democrats' involvement had been long-suspected and "the Alaska Supreme Court ruled that no law allowed it to rule on the motives of a candidate."
