It sure is puzzling what has happened to Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down. David Moyes was a surprise but solid hire from Everton. The "Anointed One" the signage at Old Trafford advised, anointed by Sir Alex. Moyes had recommending him also bedevilment of Manchester City while at Everton. Didn't work out. They coulda had Mourinho.
Chelsea got Mourinho-and a title last year, too. What happened this year is just inexplicable. Mourinho fatigue is real; it happened at Real Madrid. He is demanding, intense, volatile. But it was a little soon and a little sudden for Mourinho fatigue to set in. They won their last match of the 2014-15 championship season in May and then began the 2015-16 season with a draw at home to Swansea and a 3-0 loss away to Manchester City. Literally from one match to the next, albeit spanning over two months, Chelsea went from champs to chumps.
United followed the David Moyes fiasco with Louis van Gaal, a bigger name who made it on a bigger stage than had Moyes. It's been more Moyes.
At this level, the level of Manchester United and Chelsea, the bird should not hit the air pump with a managerial hire. They can have anyone they want! They "anoint!" But it happened, the bird hit the air pump.
Manchester City is at that level, too. No birds hit any air pumps at the Etihad and management there made changes because they wanted to, not because they had to. Risky business, that. The intense Roberto Mancini won a title, the players and club got Roberto fatigue and replaced him with Mellow Manuel Pellegrini who won a title. Now, if rumors are true, they will replace Xanax with crack and hire Pep Guardiola. They will win with Pep, just as they did with Pellegrini and Mancini. Pep will burn himself out after three-four years and they'll hire somebody else and they'll win with him too.
But United didn't win with Ferguson's replacement nor with Ferguson's replacement's replacement and they won't win with whomever is van Gaal's replacement. There is something wrong systemically at United. Chelsea, they will win again with the right manager.
