The young white man sat down for the lunch next to one of the inmates, a large black man. The young white man was a social worker. With others he had brought the children of the inmates to the prison to see their fathers and mothers.
“What’s it like to be free?”
Long pause.
“It's hard to say." He paused again. "It's all I've ever known."
"It must be great."
"Yeah, I think it is."
