I am losing my fucking mind.

If Trump can issue executive orders so can I. "Therefore I, William Kristol, co-author of Morning Shots, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and Bylaws of The Bulwark, do hereby extend our period of National Celebration through the weekend."

As he left the White House to head to Florida on Friday, Trump told reporters that he “wanted to make a change.” He said Wiles had done a “great job,” but “sometimes in life you have to make moves.”

nytimes

Idk

?

Wiles’s resignation comes after Republicans suffered embarrassing losses in the midterms, with Democrats taking control of the House, Senate, governor mansions, and many state and local seats. The president is reportedly blaming Wiles for the debacle.

nytimes

Let me see if I can understand this:

1) Trumpie and Vance blamed the midterm debacle on the Iran debacle.

2) Trumpie is blaming Wiles for the midterm debacle.

3) Stephen Miller got Wiles' job for being an Iran dove.

Ergo, doesn't it ergo that Wiles was an Iran hawk?

Trumpworld is so confusing

Mr. Miller’s pitch for the job as the gatekeeper to the president, according to people who heard it, was that the president needed to wind down the Iran war, a conflict that the president’s core supporters viewed as a betrayal.

Are we to take from that that Susie Wiles was an Iran hawk and that Trumpie listened to her on warmaking?

Arizona Democrats have won the State Senate and State House of Representatives, according to The Associated Press. Coupled with Gov. Katie Hobbs’s re-election victory, Democrats will now have a trifecta — both legislative chambers and the governor’s office — for the first time since the mid-1960s. In fact, the Democrats have not had an outright majority in any legislative chamber in Arizona since the early 1990s.

Democrats are now claiming their victories include a majority of all statehouse seats across the country.

More than 500 seats in state legislatures were flipped blue in Tuesday’s midterms, according to the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, the arm of the party focused on state-level races.

Democrats have new trifectas — control of the governor’s office and both statehouse chambers — in at least Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. That puts the party in a powerful position to pass state laws.

MS. Colum Increased Lead Top Story in Google News

AP hasn't called. Mama has.

Democrats’ Lead in Mississippi Senate Race Grows

To me, that means Scott Colum is going to win. The new count total: Colum +2,010 raw, 49.1%-48.8%. AP has not called it yet.

Colom holds a narrow lead over Hyde-Smith as vote-counting in Mississippi enters its second full day. State law does not allow for recounts. And although both candidates remain below the 50% mark, Mississippi does not hold runoff elections for U.S. Senate races. Several thousand provisional ballots are expected to be counted in the race and the state has until Nov. 10 to resolve those ballots.

White House Warns Conservative Groups It Is ‘Monitoring’ Their Statements

"As always, we are monitoring statements, press releases, and media engagements from your organizations," a memo, sent to more than 3,000 conservative organizations, said, according to the Wall Street Journal. The White House insisted to the Journal that this kind of language was normal in these memos, but the Journal could not find another example of it.

The shift comes as a flurry of conservative voices, from commentator Matt Walsh, to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, to Vice President JD Vance himself, have lambasted President Trump's policies and decision-making—placing sole blame on him for Republicans' midterm election loss.

How to Abolish the Electoral College Without Abolishing the Electoral College: The National Popular Vote Compact

Five of forty-seven presidents were elevated by winning the Electoral College but losing the popular vote. Which pisses people off.

But the Electoral College is established in the Constitution. Amending the Constitution is pain in the assholes. Which also pisses people off:

  • Proposing:

          1) Two-thirds passage of both House and Senate -OR-

1a) Constitutional Convention: must be called by Congress if two-thirds of state legislatures vote to ask Congress to do so.

  • Ratifying:
1a) Three-quarters of state legislatures vote to ratify

1b) Three-quarters of State Ratifying Conventions vote to ratify.

What to do? Well, here's one thing that eighteen states and D.C. have already done: Enact laws to join the National Popular Vote Compact. Those nineteen jurisdictions account for 222 of the 270 Electoral Votes needed to win the presidency.

How it works:

The Compact needs states with 48 additional Electoral Votes to join.

If and when the Compact gets  to 270 on July 20 of a presidential election year, the Compact is activated: the joining jurisdictions are bound by their previously passed laws to activate it.

Upon activation the Compact binds its states to award its Electoral Votes to the winner of the national popular vote.

Why this is a bad idea (in my opinion):

Wisconsin was Donald Trump's tipping point state in the 2016 election. That is, Wisconsin put him over 270 Electoral Votes. But Hillary Clinton won the national popular vote by 2.9M votes. If Wisconsin was a member of the National Popular Vote Compact in 2016, its 10 Electoral Votes would have gone to Hillary. To me, the will of the people of Wisconsin would have been frustrated. I would be fucking PISSED if my vote for Trump had gone (via the EVs and the Compact) to Hillary. I mean really most sincerely pissed.

Losing Wisconsin's EVs would have brought Trumpie down to 294 EVs. For Hilary to have reached 270 EVs, two other states totaling 25 EV's or more would have had to have joined the Compact on July 20, 2016, thus activating it. Pennsylvania, 20 EVs in 2016 and Iowa (6) are reasonable targets. If they had been members of the Compact, along with Wisconsin, on July 20, 2016, they would have been obligated by state law to turn over their EVs to a candidate, Hilary Clinton, that their state's citizens did not vote for.

Ladies and gentlemen there would be riots. The citizenry of Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Iowa would murder the Electors and their state reps.

The name of the country is the United States of America. Not the unitary "America". "States", the United STATES.

Our flag has fifty stars, one for each of the STATES. A united group of STATES is what we are and is literally woven into our flag. You want a country named America?...I don't know how you do that, actually. You want a country with a flag with one fucking star, Somalia welcomes you. But we are the United States of America and we have fifty fucking stars on our flag. Move on.

The National Popular Vote Compact should be executed and the body burned.

Yes, Texas Republicans Are Choking on Talafreako

The Machine, and the Messaging, That Won Texas for Democrats

Years of organizing met a moment of voter discontent, as James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa offered Texans a vision of economic relief and political change.

nytimes

The Democratic Party’s stunning domination in Texas on Tuesday began with the promise of one candidate, James Talarico.

"Dems stunning domination in Texas", I have to blink.

After decades of Republican rule, his well-funded, disciplined and scandal-free U.S. Senate campaign helped convince voters that winning was possible this time.

...
With Democrats poised to occupy nearly every statewide office — a tectonic shift...

...fielding candidates for nearly every race — all 150 state House districts, every statewide office, every state board of education position and every major judicial race. The Republican Party in Texas did not do the same, leaving some Democrats with uncontested seats.

“This is the first year where we really had a machine built,” said Katherine Fischer, the executive director of the Texas Majority PAC, which worked with the Texas Democratic Party to run and train candidates. “We filled every single state and federal seat for the first time in state history of either party.”

...the scale of Democratic success was so great that it appeared likely to propel a legislative candidate in Fort Worth’s conservative suburbs to victory despite having suspended her campaign over questions about whether a conviction could disqualify her.
...
The Democratic Party’s candidates, especially in statewide races, stuck to a consistent middle-of-the-road message, promising to address cost-of-living concerns and to curtail cultural battles that have consumed Texas politics for years.
...
By contrast, Republicans leaned into culture wars that had seemed potent just two years before. They believed they had easy targets in Ms. Hinojosa and Mr. Talarico, who had spoken publicly about gender, race and equity.

“Some people know him as ‘Tofu Talarico.’ Some people call him ‘Six Gender Jimmy,’” said Mr. Paxton on the night of his primary victory in March. “I’ve even heard some people even call him James Talafreako.”

That nickname stuck, but not as Mr. Paxton expected.

At a Houston rally the next day, Mr. Talarico told supporters that they could buy a T-shirt declaring “I’m a Talafreako.” More than 43,000 did, netting his campaign more than $1 million.

The nimble response — parrying rather than counterpunching — captured the instincts of his campaign. Mr. Talarico stuck relentlessly to a core message: Texas politics was dominated by billionaires and politicians like Mr. Paxton who had served their own interests at the expense of ordinary Texans.

And like Trump nationally.👇
...
👆Democrats also had one major, if unintentional, benefactor: President Trump, who visited the state repeatedly, reminding voters of why he was unpopular.

“The biggest thanks have to go to Donald Trump,” said Cristóbal Alex, who helped advise a super PAC supporting Mr. Talarico.
